I use an Infra Red bulb which is good but it does give off light, if your happy with a red glow then its perfect. I'm actually building a viv stack and I will be using ceramic heat bulbs, no light is given off so perfect for a Royal.

i use infrared bulbs the red light does not bother me at all, yes you will need a dimmer thermostat, i got mine from surrey pet supplies, best price i found, i got my bulb guard from local pet shop for £20. BATS was on here the other day on about really cheap bulb guards somewhere.

Yup, Blue Lizard - sorry I can't post links but you can google them. Details over on General section - the guards really are cheap and in fact I've found their stats and bulbs are pretty cheap too - delivery's free on an order over £50 and I tend to stock up on bulbs, F10 etc if buying from them so as to get free delivery, but then I do have 11 snakes lol.

Its important to know that if you use a infra red bulb you can only use a dimming stat on that type of bulb. If you use ceramic heat bulbs then you can use either a dimming thermostat or a pulse porportional thermostat.

I have never had an issue with infra red bulbs on a dimming stat, they do their job very well, the only reason I'm switching to ceramics is Duke HATES any light, so a totally dark bulb will be better for him and the Boa vivarium is huge (6X2X1.5 feet) and is going to need a fair bit of oomph to heat it and I'm not sure if a IR bulb would do the trick

I use komodo IR bulbs from this guy: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Komodo-Spot-Bulb-Red-Infrared-Bulb-/170636483352?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects&var=&hash=item6d6fd2a4a6

I use habistat dimming stats, again search around and get a bargain, I've paid as little as £18 for one, and as much as £35 for one.

I like pro rep light guards, strong and powder coated to reduce heat transfer (they dont get really hot), you'll need a hacksaw to click out one piece of mesh for the wire but small price to pay http://livefoodonline.com/shop/article_621/ProRep-Spot-light-Bulb-Guard-Black.html?pse=coa

The cheapest dimmer stat is Microclimate - Habistat do them as well but they're more expensive - the only advantage I find with my (secondhand - I got lucky) habistat dimmers is that there's a manual adjuster (the swear filter throws a hissy fit re the word 'k**b' lol.) Microclimates are a bit fiddly in that they need a precision screwdriver to adjust the temp (clockwise) but otherwise are pretty much the same. Find them on the 'reptile heating' section of online shops.

Bulbs - you'll find them in 'heating' or 'lighting' sections as above. At present I'm using 100w IR bulbs in 3' vivs - and gollygosh it's HOT tonight in sunny Yorkshire ...most of the bulbs are darkened completely ...BUT, if there was a sudden freeze-up in the early hours, then those 100w would be able to deliver the power to heat up the viv ... bit like taking a coat with you on a coolish day - if you don't need it you can take it off - but if you haven't got it you can't add the heat. So a slightly higher watt bulb than you think you might need is a good idea lol.

I like 100 watts too for just that reason, the dimmer can dim them down if its too hot but cant find extra power in the cold.

I'm sure what BATS was saying was habistats have a stickie out dial, easier to adjust but also easier to knock and microclimates have a dial you can only adjust with a screwdriver, fiddly to change impossible to knock. I've only had habistats and find them very good so havent had the need to look at others.

LOL - you could put it like that, yeah!

Ah - amendment - I was talking about microclimate needing the precision screwdriver but typed in habistat by mistake - have amended - sorry!!

Blue Lizard bulb guards currently on offer have a cutout thingy already installed for flex plus an opening hatch for changing the bulb.

If you get the trad guard which screws to the ceiling and has to be removed for bulb changing, use screw eyes to fix it instead of screws ...these can be removed and re-installed manually, which is a great help if, as in my case, I found a bulb had blown in the small hours ...not at my best then, in grumpy git mode lol, but the bulb was changed in minutes without having to find the feral screwdriver.
