Ok so i went into my local rep shop yesterday and he's had some Royal eggs pipping. Inside one of them being the most gorgeous Albino Royal i've ever seen!! Here's the dilema; i REALLY want it but its £450! I can afford it but it would be tight, and with three young kids to feed/clothe etc would it be selfish of me to just say 'sod it' and buy the Royal anyway?? I don't know what to do!!!!!

You say you can afford it - so I'm assuming it wouldn't deprive your kids in any way. You probably feel that that money should go on treats for the kids - but I really don't feel there's anything wrong in buying something really wonderful for yourself now and again - you need treats too and to feel good, and the kids will probably be thrilled with a new and unusual snake, as well as reaping the benefits of a happy mother.

With three kids you must put in a lot of hard work - you need to reward yourself!

well thats the idea i was going with Bats, i deserve a treat! lol but the mummy in me is saying 'but there's so much more practical things you could spend that money on!' Arghhhh!! What i might just do, is ask the rep shop if they'll be breeding them again next year, if he says yes then i'll save up for it and wait, if not then i'll have this one, maybe......

As BATS, as long as your kids are not going to suffer, why not treat yourself? Just because your a mum, doesnt mean you cant spend some of your savings on a present for yourself.

As they all said, TREAT YOURSELF, us mums always go without (shame all you men say) you never know the kids might enjoy having a snake for a pet, they can brag about it at school. GO FOR IT

It may not help too much, but see if the shop owner will budge on price a little bit too. (point out the fact that it's a new season, and there are going to be thousands of well priced Albinos around, the fact he's bred them himself also may help him come down a little bit for you)
But personally, if your kids were going to suffer or be affected negatively at all, as a mother, I very very much doubt you'd even consider it, the fact you are considering it, I say go for it :)

Nikki, you are looking at this completely wrong...

My kids were ages 6 and 4 when we got our first royal. I am deathly scared of snakes - seriously phobic - so for years and years, I refused to allow my husband to get a pet snake.

But, my husband would do some yardwork, find a racer snake or some southern banded water snake and catch them. He would put them in a big jar and he would show them off to the kids pointing out all the markings, how to identify them, whether they're venomous or not - that kind of stuff. The kids started to really like these backyard creatures.

A few times, I would catch the kids with a jar of something - grasshopper, caterpillar, toads, spiders, etc. etc. in the house. My husband encourages them. So, I just had to give in - as long as they release whatever they catch before dinner.

And then, I catch them with a jar with a snake in it - in the house! They would try to hide it from me. My husband, of course, is the one catching the snakes.

I finally just sat myself down and researched everything there is to know about these backyard snakes we got. And with this research, I realized my kids could easily have picked up a water moccasin thinking they're southern banded water snakes - seeing as their dad does it all the time.

So, when the reptile store opened a few miles from my house, I went with the kids there - it was like their weekly trip to the zoo everytime they go there. I found this yellow snake that this 6-year-old was holding like it's some rubber toy. I see it all the time that I go there, some little kid would be holding one of these snakes. So, I finally decided, okay, these snakes are not too bad. They're kinda cute. So, one day, I surprised my kids and my husband with the yellow snake (come to find out, it's a pastel royal python). I got the entire kit and kaboodle that the snake was on - tank, heat mat, hides, waterbowl, substrate, thermostat, etc. etc. I even took home the stand that it was on. So, the store basically just unplugged the entire thing, loaded it in my car, and I plugged it at home.

Now, with the pet snake, I was able to get the husband and kids to promise not to catch backyard snakes into jars anymore. And I told them - if nobody takes care of that snake, he is going to die, because I am not taking care of any snakes. Nope. I'll feed the dog, but I'm not doing anything with the snake.

I tell you, my 2 kids are snake experts now. All their friends hang out at my house to play with the snakes (their parents, of course, refuse to get them their own). They've done show and tells at school and at the cub scouts. They love these snakes!

And here's the icing on the cake - my kids are 9 and 7 now, and last year, they saw a teen-ager trying to whack the head of a snake by the lake. My kids and their friends (mostly their age) rushed to the scene and stopped the teen-ager from killing the snake. This teen-ager thought it was a rattlesnake come to kill us all. My sons were able to tell him the snake he was trying to whack is a harmless one (southern banded water snake) and that if he would find a venomous one like a water mocassin, it is best to leave it alone especially since it is by the lake - a good distance from the houses.

So yeah - this is a long story - but what I'm trying to tell you is that, you might think this is just a "present for you". But what you're not seeing is the precious education you are passing on to your children. Because of this cute albino, your children will take a part of what Steve Irwin has always tried to do - get people to appreciate a piece of nature so that they would then feel a strong desire to take good care of it. If these snakes can get me - the snake phobic - to appreciate them to the point that I even handle them now, how much more for the impressionable children who are the ones who will be charged with conserving the environment these snakes naturally live in?

How's that for dramatic???
I mean - it's a good excuse to get more snakes!

Snake owner since Oct 2008, so yeah, I'm no expert.
