Well in my opinion its bull, my baby George is out everyday for at least an hour, and most of the time he wont sit still inside his rub when I put him back.
so tonight I put him back as usual, and as usual he was active. so i opened up the lid, and low and behold out pops george ready for more carpet walkies.
im sure it depends on individual snakes really.
any one else notice how much they are like cats when you stroke them and get there ticklish spot? |

Royals go into stages... Usually he starts out with stressed out roaming in the first few days you have him... then he settles down into a more relaxed mood once he acclimates.
Then they go on exploration mode - usually late at night when it is dark and quiet.
There are some who explores during the day as a response to the handler. None of my royals do this though. They're all night crawlers. They'll wake up when my kids play with them at daytime and they'll go exploring. But, usually, my kids would put them under their "castles" and they just chill there.
Okay, castles... my kids, they're silly kids. Their favorite game is playing toy soldier wars... they put a hide on one end of the coffee table to act as castle, another hide on the end of the coffee table - put a flag on each hide, then have the snakes under the hides as the KING... they "deploy" soldiers and toy tanks across the coffee table who then try to "capture" the flag. Yep. That's what my snakes are for... crazy, huh?

hahahaha great game lol. I dont take him out till about 8 in the evening so that would explain why hes happy to be out and about.
little off topic but...
I like how royals tell you what they want by pointing with there necks and tongue out, i love their quirky characters too
its hard to believe that a few months ago i couldnt stand snakes, and even when i got him i was really nervous, but now i want loads, if only... but then again id rather give all my attention to 1 or 2 than have loads and leave them locked up for days on end |

I was just like you! It took my husband 10 years of wanting a snake before I finally capitulated! I grew up in the Philippines and Filipinos are very superstitious. Snakes are evil - I mean, they see the Virgin Mary crushing the head of the snake with her heel in every church there! So, naturally, you see snake, you chop its head off - that's just what they do there.
So, when we finally got a pet snake, my family do not visit me anymore! I told my husband - just one snake! 2 months later we got another one - coz my son wants one. 2 more months later we got another one - coz my other son wants one. A few more months later we got another one - coz my sons insist I have to have one (which is just an excuse for them having another one). Then a couple years later, we got 3 more from their "experimental breeding" for "education purposes" (yeah right). So... 3 years into the hobby and we end up with 7 snakes. Not quite sure how I got hoodwinked. I guess it's because it's the one and only pet my kids actually take care of without me having to do much of anything except "problem solve". They got a dog and I end up caring for it. And I tell you, one dog is a lot more work than 7 snakes!
And yeah, we call that neck pointing thing "periscoping". My snakes do that too! Have you noticed they do that when they first see the TV? It's like they are watching the TV and then after a while they get bored with the show and go "periscope" somewhere else. |

two of my four will come out for a walk every day if given the chance, the other two need to be coaxed out but seem more than happy to hang around the laptop or as others, periscope and watch TV for a while lol |

My two only come out when they're hungry. And if they're out being handled, they'd rather be down my top or in my hair. |

LOL - I wanted snakes ALL MY LIFE (just turned 59) and in Oct 09 went to a shop in great excitement and trepidation (thought I would have to be an 'expert' to be permitted to buy a SNAKE) I ended up with 2 corn hatchlings, and ought to have known then what it would be like ...
Bigdon - the trap is terrible, but I don't regret it; I'm happy with my obsession but I know exactly what you mean - I wouldn't care to have a load of reptiles I scarcely looked at - not that the snakes would exactly care as long as they were clean and well-housed and fed and watered, but still...
It works out okay too, because some of them are usually doing the big 'I want to be alone' scene, some of them are digesting/shedding, but there's usually one who's staring hard at me and suggesting 'armchair walkies, Lil??' So I get a snake fix.
Yes, when a snake's in the mood for walkies, it wants to live round your neck, in your hair, in my case in an armpit ... And this sounds a bit unbelievable, but I swear Surahi LOVES her chin to be tickled - she is, as you say, just like a cat lol! |
