Congrats they are great lizards and as far as sexing I'm sure you've been told by the person who sold it to you but a male is quite easy to spot as they have two quite large lumps at the base of their tail just behind the cloaca, so as it grows it will leave you in no doubt lol |

in reply: the morph is normal, I tend to prefer normals to morphs (even with royals)
the rep room said that it will most likely be a male but its not 100%
and as for a boa being next ummmmm.... yeah i dont think so hahaha
im gonna leave him a few days to settle before i start the handling and feeding
im so happy iv got it but im scared of it running away, they are so fast!!!
heres a blurry pic:

I must say I do like normals over morphs. Lovely one you got there. Shouldn't they eat every day, I know cresties do? |

No they eat every day Don what I usually did was leave 1 dish of mealworms and a 2nd dish with calci powder in then dusted crickets twice a week with nutrobol multi vits, they are quite clever if they need extra calcium they will lick it straight out of the dish, and you should find that they only tend to use one area of their viv to go potty Oh and just like the cresties the food should only be as big as the gap between it's eyes.
You'll also find that those grey strips will probably go as it gets older and it'll go a bright yellow with black spots.... |

Males will have lumps like these in the pic at the base of the tail:
Females don't have a large pair of plums like that.
You can also see the femoral pores on the male very clearly, they look like little dots joining the legs together. Females are very very faint.

Thanks for your advice and tips guys, like with all animals there are alot of conflicting opinions on the net and even in specialist reptile shops, so its much appreciated.
what do you guys think of UV light, to keep cost down i would rather use vitamins for the D3 requirement but do you think UV is a must have or optional?
and handling: how long before its too much? and am i right in assuming to handle before rather than after feeding?
thanks

They are nocturnal so technically they don't need UV however there is research to suggest that they bask in the early evening when the sun is going down, since their skin is quite thin they easily absorb UV, so if you decide to use a UV anything more than 2% will be to strong, I used the arcadia 2%. With regards to handling I used to do it round about dusk while they were just waking up lol, just be carefull when picking them up because although it would take a good tug for them to drop their tales they will also do it if they get stressed, hope that helps About ten or fifteen mins I say was enough |

thanks reptilemadd yeah it was the length of time i was unsure of, il go with the 15mins over the 10mins lol
he handles surprisingly well, i expected to be gecko chasing all night but he was calm and seemed confident and not jumpy at all.
i must say i love the way the little paws/hands/feet (i dont know) feel when he walks up my arm.

I know what you mean they haven't got sticky toe pads like cresties but they seem to climb quite well I don't know if you've fed it any crickets yet but mine tended to get quite excited and rattle their tails by thumping it on the ground really fast, not sure if it is to distract their prey but they always seemed to catch the little buggers lmao |

LOL, i wish he got so excited, he wont go near a cricket until it moves and then he is interested, but he will only get it if it moves, if it stays still its safe lol.
i do have a question or 2 though, i have been handling and he has been fine, today when i tried to get him out he started squawking and striking, i was only putting me hand in to tempt him to jump on but its like he was being territorial.
Is that normal? or could i be doing something wrong
oh i did do something different when this happened though, instead of washing my hands and then using sanitizer, i just washed my hands, so they would have smelled different, possible reason? |

Yes its possible or he's just decided he doesn't like you lol but seriously yes it could be that your smell was different or he could've just been having a bad day, was it about the same time you normally pick him up? I used to have an albino female that did that pretty much every time I tried picking her up, but once she was out she was fine, try putting your hand in palm up I know it sounds silly but it's a much less threatening gesture. It's so funny when you see them do it doesn't matter if it's the first or the hundreth, they do it when they meet a female as well sorry don't know how to post links but I'm sure there will be a video on you tube |

Hi, sorry to butt in but noticed you said you didn't know how to post links, Reptilemadd? As a fellow-sufferer from computers, this is what I've finally learned to do -
Mouse on to the address at the top of the page - the bit that for this thread, for instance, says www.theroyal ...ID=6.
Right click. A box will come up with options. Left click 'copy'.
Say you're copying from youtube to TRP - you'll need a tab open for both. If you're copying a thread to another post on TRP, it doesn't matter, just return to the thread you're posting on, make sure the mouse cursor sign or whatever its called is actually in the box where you write your text, and right click again.
The option box will appear again; this time left click 'paste' and the address will be copied.
Add your text if you haven't done so, post your reply, and when it appears on the forum, the address can be clicked and viewed.
Hope this helps.
Leo is lovely, Don. |
