Hi all, just need some advice please? I've put my 2 biggest together (patty - 2.5kg & becks 1.2kg) for me first breeding season.

Starting on 24th october, i've used a 3 days in / 3 days out basis and offered small meals on the rest days which the male ate but the female refused. In this time i've not altered the temps or the heating in the room and noticed at least 2 definite locks ; the longest was at least 4 hours. In their second pairing the had 1 possible lock but no definites.

I've tried to disturb them as little as possible, but I just wondered if this is normal (un-witnessed locks) or if anyone else has noticed this fluctuation in locks happen during the season? My girl has also been spending more time on top of her hide, but not appearing bothered by my boys presence either?

I've been reading up on breeding books / online royal sites and a lot of info says that a male will lose interest in a female that he's successfully bred with but i couldn't be that lucky, could I?? lol!

I just wondered if there's any signs that I should be keeping an eye out for, as I don't wanna cause undue stress to either of them by keep trying to pair them up unnecessarily.

Thanks for helping! (in advance!)

You need to lower the temps, if you don't you,ll have a very high risk of slugs because the males sperm will be defunct before it can get to work.

thanks hodgie :) I forgot to say - my mat temp is around 82-85f and the room temp is around 70-75f ; are these in the right ranges for successful breeding?

lowering the temps isnt a necessary thing, i now quite a few breeders that in the last 2 years they have not lowered there temps for breeding, and had no slugs and healthy eegs like you they did from lowering the temps, so they now dont lower as its just easier to leave them and causes less harm and stress to them

Thanks everyone for your help with this, i'm getting first-time nerves and haven't even got the eggs yet?! Becks had gone into shed at the mo but will putting them back together once he's finished his rest ;)

Mind you, I gotta admit it's so exciting?! is that daft? To me the goal is to be able to make little baby snakes but it feels like this is the 'ultimate test' ; that i'm doing everything right by my 'kids' as if they weren't happy and in good health then they wouldn't breed :) now... where's the valium?? lol!

Hi peeps! hope everyone's OK, just a quick update to say that Becks & Patty have had 2 more good locks since being put back together, I think Becks must've worn himself out the last time, lol! I gave him a couple of extra days rest before putting him back in and it's made a world of difference :)

And so the learning curve continues!...
