Well I have just moved into my new place, fully double glazed, fully central heated and I am living the dream...well almost.
My sons been bitten from head to toe, by what I assume are fleas. So my new home is basically infested.
Now I have sprays and floor powder...and I need to fumigate the whole house & my bedroom but I have my royal and corn in there...
I dont want to poison them, the whole house needs treating at the same time....do you think I am ok (with proper ventilaion) to use the floor powder (their vivs are quite high up on top of a 5 drawer chest). I dont want to use the aerosol in their room and I never have but this is a problem that needs treating and remedying asap...
Any advice would be great, I would usualy just spray the f*****s dead but I do have some respect for the kids and animals in the house...my poor fluffy cat is not a happy bunny.
Edit: Just to clarify I am proposing to use the floor powder shake (not like talc, like grit so it wont float in the air) and ventilate the room and continue a rigorous hoovering regime with some powder in the vacuum drum to kill any i pick up.

| is it not possible to rehouse your snakes at a friends while you sort this out, as there is going to be quite a lot of unsnake friendly chemicals in the air. |

the rehouse idea is great, but if u couldn't you can treat the whole house except the bedroom, and when u finish, move the snakes to other room and treat the bedroom.

I could but for prevention it says i should do every room at the same time as they do tend to travel about the house quite quickly which would eventually make me fumigating pointless. I may move the snakes to another room once its completely ventilated and just do the bedroom separate...
Do you think if i ventilate properly I could bring them down Saturday and do the bedroom or do you think that is too soon. I am using commercial chemicals for now because i need a quick fix not a 4 week wait for enviro health to get their act in gear...The chemicals have a 24 hour working time, and after with proper ventilation, about 4 hours my cat can be released into the rest of the house again without harm...says that on the tin...also says its harmfull to a whole host of other creepies so I just wanna be really careful!
Im hating this, I didnt sign up for a house share... :/ |

God, that is awful! This has happened to me in the bad old days before efficient fleakillers - you must be going round the twist!
But personally I'd arrange for the snakes to be boarded out while the problem's tackled - is there a rep shop near you who would take boarders? I truly wouldn't like to use any conventional flea stuff to fumigate a house with snakes in it - they are just too sensitive.
I really hope you can get things sorted out asap.
Just as an afterthought, where are you? Is it possible there is a member here who could board them for you? I'd be prepared to - I'm in Wakefield - and I'm sure there are plenty of others who'd do the same. |

Right, I taped up my bedroom door and put wet cloths at the bottom to prevent any leakage. I did the whole house aside from the bedroom. I will move them out come the weekend once the whole house has had a good airing and several vacums.
I have had my bedroom window open the whole time so they have had clean fresh air in the room all day long, however I wont unseal the door until I go to bed tonight at about 11 so thats a full 14 hours since fumigating.
There is a boarding place in Ramsgate which is a very short train ride. I could have boarded them there for future reference. If I don't remedy the situation this time, I will board them and book a proper treatment from the council...
What a complete ball ache this has been... :/

What's probably happened is that the previous house owners have had dogs/cats and fleas, but the flea larvae have pupated in floorboard/skirting gaps and waited. These evil little suckers can pupate for a long long time, even if the place is done out/decorated and the hosts long gone, until another cat/dog arrives and the pupa's inner clock says - hey dude, lunch is here, and the new flea jumps out of its old bodycasing and restarts the whole cycle...they're survivors, but HOPE they don't survive with you!!

Yes, thanks markmifsud! Bromleys a bit far, im in Margate but thanks for the kind offer.
I know the cycle well bats. My mums long haired moggy gets very bad and I treat her house regularly as shes a bit old...and we have to look after out elduns and their moggies...
My cat is treated at the vets every 6 months for fleas worms...the works so I KNOW I didnt bring them with me...
I told the landlord about my lodgers and he said that the previous lady didnt have pets...roll out my CSI head, claw marks on the wallpaper, cat litter along the skirting boards....mmmmm....chinny reckon!
So im basicaly up the creek without a paddle because I obviously have my own cat with me, Ive got to do this all on my own!
Anyways, its been a long day... |

I like to use that back of the neck prescription stuff from the vet's ...I have only 3 cats now and back yard's wired in ...last time they got fleas was a year or 2 back when my brother in law came for tea with his dog but since fleas gravitated to cats and the back of the neck stuff broke the cycle, not too bad.
10 years ago I was invaded by ferals and their tiny kittens, who I couldn't treat, and I had little larvae waving at me out of the soft furnishing ...ewww!
The worst though was 1980 when my parents moved to the lake district. Visited with dogs...Biiig de possible flea of dogs with every product known at that time to owner and vet as mother is houseproud mad. All well until later in week when dogs display HUGE fleas I never knew existed before, and mother goes ballistic!
'Erm, mother, was there a pet in here before you got the house?'
'Oh well, yes, they had an old dog. BUT WE CLEANED AND PAINTED EVERYWHERE!'
No point in telling mother about the life cycle of fleas. Mother knows best. We slunk home with our dogs and giant fleas ...oh boy, I've never SEEN fleas that size ... Kendal mint vintage outsize monster fleas ... And all there was in those days was Nuvan Top.

Well I opened the door after another few vacums and having the windows open all day. Both snakes were fine.
Just re reading bats, you know they changed the chemical formula of frontline now, thats why you can now but it at some pet stores and boots. The frontline treatments rubbish now, to the point where ive seen em rolling around in the neck stuff days later...
My vet gives me stuff called Advocate but its a 4 weeks treatment just like commercial spot drops. Frontline was a 3 month treatment and when it was good it was a godsend. The only treatment to prevent fleas from breeding which broke the cycle, I used this with Zodiac which was a 12 month spray for furniture and carpets with growth regulator...
Its the breeding/growth regulators they have taken out of the chemicals now...you can kill the fleas but those eggs just sit there.
Im going to move the snakes down saturday and do the bedroom, they will stay downstairs for a week so i can get 2 treatments done on the bedroom, then they will go back up after next weekend and i will seal the door and do the whole house again. That way if i keep overlapping the treatments like this, i shouldnt get too many escape the process. Also the corns viv is heavy and I dont wanna move it too much, shes not happy with me as it is :(
Ill keep everyone posted in case something bad happens but i may just be able to overcome this trial with a happy ending...woooo! Itll be a first, been a rubbish week! |

Hi, hope you've got the little stinkers on the run! Yeah, I think I used something called Advantage when my present cats had to be de-flea'd, but, yes, anything you can buy over the counter isn't much good. Though I think I've got some Wilko household spray under the kitchen sink, from 10 years ago lol ...
Reading about your experiences, I think that if I ever moved house again, if I could possibly manage it, I think I'd fog the new house if there was time before moving in, just in case ...though if you're in a chain of course that's impossible.
Hope the rubbish week has now started to get much better for you and that you have a really good weekend and finally start to enjoy your new house! |

Im back with my almost festive infested update.
Well the commercial sprays havent worked, despite several treatments. The Advance treatment for the cat also isnt working as her neck is just a playground for them. On top of which my sons eczema has been triggered due to the chemicals and i assume flea bites that hes literally covered in.
Well Im so fed up, I went into the council and told them my situation, their gonna come in 10 days time and treat the house from top to bottom. Because I am on low income I have to pay £31. They come in, I evacuate for an hour and I can come back in with the kids and animals. They do another treatment in 4-6 weeks time...
Im not risking it with the snakes though. An unusual boarder turned up...my mother who hates snakes and didnt want me to get one let alone two and wont even look at them has offered them my old bedroom at home for a few weeks while I get the place fumigated. I was so shocked, my mum hates them but shes willing to do that for me and them...she just said "as long as i dont need to look at them" i said "mum, they probably feel the same" lol
So In 10 days time I will be flea free for good...and thank goodness, its driving me potty....vacumming has become the new religion, i swear!

I had that trouble in my last house. Nightmare. I was very unimpressed, like you.
Yesterday though, I saw one flea in my bathroom, so off to the shop today to get Bailey some stuff (and carpet stuff) before it gets out of control. |

Awwww I am missing them so much...but despite my mum not wanting to look at them I have had a duskly/dawnly updates about my snakes. Carly who my mum has now renamed Kylie popped her head out briefly...but that was it my mum spooked her which is no suprise, I spook her too.
Shes been most intrigued with Mister though, since he only has a soup box as a hide you can see him fairly easily and if he sees someone lurking about hel usualy come out and do a small show, perhaps linger round the waterbowl and try for a ceiling walk to realise that although his head is slithering along the roof of his rub, his body wont allow it. She told me he had a really white belly and she thought his belly would be pattered like his top, shes learning something new everyday...wait till she sees Carly/Kylies belly...like a checkerboard...
I think she likes them...and I want them home badly, my beauties.
I may have to go down there today for a cuddle with them, and hope she doesnt want to keep mister. I would hand rear one for her if she wanted one though, hand rearing mine was painful enough with all the snapping but we got there...
Im so looking forward to getting them back...
On another note I spoke with the fumigator on the strength of the solution they use to kill these pests...showed him all my empty cans which use 0.5 - 0.3% of the same chemical he uses, i asked what the strength of the chemical he uses and he said it can be anything between 61-50% strength...not 0.5%.
So basically, those £12-20 quid cans are useless...the only reason they label them with warning is because there air pressured so spread more wideley. I was just told to let the carpet dry which took minutes with the heating on and then let the cat back in. He used some pump spray and said that because it wasnt as pressued as the cans he could localise the treatment meaning if i was to have the snakes here, as long as they were up high, not a drop would touch them...good news for the future...
Anyways thats another update, and I hope this thread helps someone else who has the same problem one day.
Also, that 30 second rule I have for food, out the window...no more floor biscuits for me :( |

LOL - ain't that typical! I swear there is just something about young royals that arouses the maternal instinct. That confiding badger striped face, the balled-up chubby body ...sounds like your lad has made a convert!
And hope the evil fleas are gone for good - that's a real eye-opener about the strengths of those insecticides! |
