My male Shahi is cf10 - therefore a year or so older than Prince I assume - despite his youth he did the mating fast last year. He wasn't aggressive or defensive over it, but to me it did denote that young males do have the mating urge - so it doesn't surprise me that at this time of year your lad's being a bit macho/a bit of a pain in the whatsit lol.
Naughty boy! But it's normal.
As Chris says, just leave him be for a bit and he'll settle. Shahi's hissed at me recently; if a snake's feisty I'd normally get it out to calm it with a bit of gentle handling (apart from shedding/after feeding period) but in the case of randy royals, I'll just leave them be. Prince will probably be soppy next time round; Shahi was.
Men, eh? |

My only advice is PLEASE have a video camera set up next time you handle him.
Its unlucky but you are still learning, you will get to know your snakes moods and not put them round your neck when they are grumpy. Don't let it put you off Prince will have forgotten all about it by now, so should you. |

lol rather dramatic stuff! I'd say the bite was to do with the move of home but you say he held onto you which is more a feeding reaction than a defensive or aggressive one, especially if it took you 30 minutes for him to let go that's unusual behaviour unless the smell of rat is around and he's in hunt-mode or you've been rubbing rodents on your ears xP On the more amusing side of things I'd pay to see a picture of a snake bite on an ear lmao |

So you cant handle one snake so you're selling it and getting 2? It always saddens me when a snake is palmed off because it is been a snake. They can be calmed and get used to been handled in time but you have to give them that time to settle and get used to everything going on around them. |

oh hun, why? with snakes it can take time when they're in one and have an aggressive phase... you really have to persevere with them.
See it from his point of view... really actually picture yourself as a royal python.. you've just moved into a new 'home' which you need time to settle into to... then enormous human (well we all must be big to a young royal!) picks you up when you're having an off day so you defend yourself. And that meant having a nibble on your ear :(
I know you used to be frightened of snakes, so this is a big deal for you and i think how you reacted to the bite was fantastic, you did really well to sit for 30 mins with a new royal python earring!
What if one of your new snakes does the same? and weren't you getting a boa (sorry if i've dreamed that!) They can have some mood swings too, and have the potential (depending on what type), to be a bigger snake.
Animals, people, we all have off days! (i'm about to go food shopping which never fails to turn me into a walking rage! I might bite someones ear myself!)
Just have a think before you sell him on... just seems your last post is worded a little meanly against poor Prince, saying you've bought 'two lovely pastels'... they could do the exact same thing themselves one day.
If you do decide to sell him on, fair enough, i hope you find him a lovely home with one of our fab members on here :D |

Mystras right tho, mine had to go away recently and even though hes the same snake its gonna take him time with all the shuffling about. He hasnt balled up for ages and today he did which was unusual but i was kinda expecting it, my poor snakes been so pushed from pillar to post i wouldnt be suprised if he did bite me but luckily he hasnt.
Dont give up on him straight away hun, persevere, took me weeks to stop shaking every time i took mine out of his rub because i was nervous, mines nabbed me several times once as a feeding response but i wasnt mushy mouse and he let go when i showed him that i was much bigger than his mouth...I have a corn snake with a nastier temperament than my royal, shes 6x the length of him and scares me far more than he does...but this is where ill persevere, i took on the old corn and ill see her every day and give her my love and eventually with a few drinks in me ill pick her up and she will be putty...their a mirror for yourself and if your nervous it will become a mutual thing until you overcome it.
If you do decide to part with him I think you should have second thoughts before taking on any more snakes. Your 2 pastels are just as likely to do the same. |

Aww, good lad! I'm glad you had a better experience with him.
I really don't think the hair extensions will have freaked him. I have shoulder length hair that I never cut and rarely brushand my lot sometimes climb into it and get just a bit tangled up ...my name should be Medusa lol! But they slide out again. I think they think it's a hammock ...
It's as everyone else has said, royals are placid on the whole but they occasionally have funny dos, like every other animal. It doesn't matter what you keep, you'll end up being nipped, clearing up messes, wondering why on earth they're acting so funny for no reason ...all part of living with pets in the house. |

Thats very true my squishy lovely little hoppy Gecko even has his grumpy days, he will squeak, shake his head and he has bit me too, it was hilarious, I had to explain to him that he doesn't have any teeth and biting is counter productive.
You do get used to their moods and will learn (usually after finding out the hard way) when they just want left alone and leave them to their grumpyness. |

I hope you've changed your mind on rehoming prince, I'm not going to repeat what others have already said but hope you take on their good advice, I personally don't believe royals bite for no reason so try and figure out whats p***ing the little guy off and try and correct it, try sitting and watching him to try and find out more about him. I've not had my two new pythons long but already i'm picking up on their personality, Merlin is supercool all rounder, nothing phases him, in fact he is in deep blue at the moment but still doesnt care about being handled, he feeds well and is a super striker. One of the new pythons is super confident very similar to Merlin and likes to be close to other royals, and the other royal is super shy, strike feeds but wouldnt complete feed out in the open so ive had to put him in a free faun and cover him up and leave him too finish the job in hand. Just try and figure him out |
