| Hi guys , merry Christmas, I woke this morning to a very wet viv floor, at first I thought it might be pee, but there was a lot of it and sukis water bowl was half empty,which at first I presumed was evaporation, she had a large rat on fri eve and haven't seen her out since, could she have just been enjoying some night time swimming!!!??? |

Hi, Merry Christmas to you too - looks as if she was having a dip bless her, though they can surprise you with unexpected big wees - Shiva's produced 2, with log as well, in a week.
As long as the viv is well caulked, and you take everything out and dry it thoroughly, there'll be no chance of the floor swelling ...I was saying yesterday that this sort of thing happens always at the wrong time - just when you want to put your feet up with a couple of bevvies eh? |

| Well I've just returned from a lovely day to find the whole of 3ft 8" suki curled up in her water bowl and displaced loads of water onto the viv floor, why is she doing this? My only reasonable explanation is that ive only had her a week, previously she was housed in the same viv but with a heat mat, and I've changed her heating to IR lamp( temps are 32 hot - 25-26 cool)and there's no way the ambient temps were reaching 25 with a mat.is she just too hot? I fed her on fri for first time and she ate a med rat, so she's not stressed. I'm worried it's going to wreck the wood if she keeps this up, please any advice would be greatly appreciated.I thought my temps were spot on?. |

| Haha my Boa does this, soaked floor, empty bowl. Your temps are spot on for a royal, mine are exactly the same, maybe a shed is on its way or that the humidity has dropped a little low (as seems to be a common theme at the moment with all these bad sheds around), maybe feeling a bit dry. |

| Lotabob, u could be right, I measure humidity with one of those exo terra stick ons, and it's been reading 35-40%, how can I raise this? I was gonna put a damp cloth in warm side but I can't do that forever! Any suggestions? |

Try giving her a much bigger bowl, filled about a third full, so that when she gets in, the water can't get out.
Ziska, my gopher, is an enthusiastic bather, but for toilet purposes usually.

crack some newspaper or kitchen roll down as a temporary measure mate. i raise humidity by misting all the plants in the viv and my royal rairly bathes now. takes a while to get it up to the right level tho in my experience.
awkward little sods sometimes arent they?! |

| Cheers Jonathan, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's the temp too high for her as she was on a heat mat for ages before I got her and that would've done practically nothing to ambient temp. My temps now are a gradient of 32 hot- 25 cool. Should I drop warm side to maybe 30-31? |

| my warm side is at 31, but sometimes nips up to 32 when the heating first comes on. she still thermo regulates and moves between hot and cold hides at that temp. the girl stopped bathing when the humidty hit 45/50% with me. you can fiddle with temps if you like but obviously do it in small amounts (like a degree at a time) but i reckon it'l be a humidty thing mate. as said before, might just be an upcoming shed. |

Sounds like a silly question but they do bathe a lot when they have mites, have you noticed any really small black things running around the viv? if it's not mites it could be just a shedding thing, as Bats said try a bigger bowl only a third full you could also put a towel or something under the aspen to help absorb any future spills but your temps are fine if you drop them any lower Koda may have trouble digesting food, hope this helps  |

| yeah, thats a good point. my bumblebee started bathing and thats how i spotted his mites. i was lucky enought to catch it early and square it away with that collingtons mite spray. worth a thorough check! |

| Well I gave suki a good 15 min check this eve and found what I think WAS a mite, tomorrow I'm going to clean viv out and treat with Callingtons. She has a bark hide on her warm side, can I spray that or should I bin it?I'm at a loss at how she has mites? If what I found was one, there is no evidence of them but I''ll treat anyway. Thanks guys for your help, wouldn't be without this site and your experience! |

| not sure if baking will get rid of them, but if it doesnt then probably best to ditch the bark rather than risk another outbreak. i dont know where my little infestation came from either, like bats says tho, they can be airborne at some point, and also could have been on another snake keeper youve come into contact with. its a pain but its just one of thos things you have to deal with asap. just minimise viv furniture and plonk paper towels in as substrate to give the gits nowhere to hide, then spray the poo outta them! |
