Just a general enquiry really..the frozen mice we have (given with the snakes) are covered in blood after thawing. Is this usual? I thought mice are gassed before being frozen. |

Hi Janey! Happy New Year!
Yes, it's normal. As I understand it, the freezing process sometimes causes the blood vessels in the mouse's nose to fracture (you know liquid expands on freezing.) Then when the mouse is defrosted, it looks like it's having a nosebleed and the blood gets everywhere.
Bit distressing for us, but mercifully the mouse will have gone peacefully to sleep with the co2 and won't have known a thing. |

Thanks!
No, this is what happens - it's a small home made unit but in principle the same as the commercial ones. It IS graphic, warning to everyone who reads this, but the mice, after their breathing accelerates, pass out. It acts like an anaesthetic, from which they don't wake.

But as I say, graphic, if anyone's very tenderhearted or there are children about, best not watch ... |

I actually have to smash the nose to get my Boa to eat them head first. If I dont she will either eat it bum first which isnt an issue but she has a tendency to eat from the middle and fold the mouse in half which always scares me that it'll get stuck. |

Slinky did that last night..I got a heart stopping moment when after he'd swallowed, he stretched out and kinda periscoped but leaning backwards. He went stiff then fell back with a thud..he righted himself but what a scare. |
