This little fella has worried me from day one..he refuses crickets..but loves neal worms, will take a butterworm. He had started eating some greens but today he won't even eat a meal worm.

Any suggestions?

i would leave him a day or 2 with only greens then offer a few crickets. meal worms are like junk food to them an they will ignore crickets if then think theres something else coming. wax worms are good for beardies, mine used to love them an they dont have the hard shell that mealworms do

He's in a 4' viv, strip light, and 100 watt basking lamp, plants hanging down the back which he sits on or hides at night..on and bamboo root for basking.

He did a huge poo 2 days ago..has been daily..but not today. He's definately not himself, he always jumps down for a meal worm. Ambient temp at hot end is 98F, I keep his lights on from 7am til he hides for bed at around 8pm.

sounds good, how far from the floor is the uv light? should be about 8-10" unless your using a reflector
as bats said he could be coming up to a shed or just being a funny/fussy git, they do that sometimes when their young.
does he hide behind the plants etc during the day?

Hmm well its on the ceiling, closest to the glass doors..probably around 10-12" its a vivotec.

Yeah he hid for a couple of hours..hiding from a large hopper which was another story getting them out..there were 3 one leapt out on my daughter who screamed and won't go up the stairs as I shoved a cup over it..another is captured in a tub and the 3rd vanished..maybe he ate it LOL
Anyway I was afraid he'd died so I hunted through the foliage until I found him clinging to a leaf..I prised him out of there.

Yep he spends most of the day in his plants..peering out at me..
He is a comic and aye he's fussy for sure and terrified of crickets..and hoppers now they have grown. I ordered a tub of small brown silent crickets..500 smallest I could get from ebay

Today he's gaping, I misted him with tepid water..he ate one meal worm after lengthy persuasion..namely my fingers.

Oh man, who said Royals can be a headache? LOL

i used to have my uv lights hanging down the back wall about 8" ish off the floor.
i would move the uv light onto tha back wall and lower
and remove the plants. they will hide away from the uv and after a while this could lead to MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) as the uv helps them produce vitamin d3 for absorbing calcium.
what supplements do you use?

I have calcium powder which I used on the insects when he eats em lol

He doesn't usually hide out of sight..he tends to stretch out on a high leaf, so most of the time about 8" from the UV. AT he's sitting on his root, closest point to the UV.

He looks bright and as cheeky as always..my problem I can't move the light cos Steve is away offshore until 11th.

thats alright then if hes not acctually hiding away from it.
you can get calcium powder with d3 to give once a week and a multivitamin powder again once a week.
can also get stuff to gut load the crickets/locusts, i did not gut load them often just put some leftover veg in their boxes.
if you gut load it has to be done 24hrs(if i remember right) before feeding to the beardie

Ok a couple of things JanieW 1,the live food should be no bigger than the distance between his eyes anything to big will scare him,
2, the UV strip is ok on the ceiling as long as he can get to within 8" of it to absorb the Uv just out of intreset how long is it and what percentage Uv is it, 3, he needs calcium on a daily basis but only on one of his feeds as too much is just as bad as to little, and he needs a good multi-vitamin twice a week again only on one feed, the best way is calcium mon-fri and multi vitamins on sat and sun, 4, it's poosible he's got an unhealthy build up of parasites which will also put him off his food, have you wormed him recently? if so that to can put him off his food as they have to do it via a tube down his throat, which in turn can become inflamed, 5, as BATS has said it may be just that he's coming up to a shed, mine always shed in parts first the tail then legs, then body and finally head, 6, lastly the temp in your cool end sounds a little high it should be around 110/115f in the hot end down to about 90f in the cool end with an ambient of about 84f, also there is no need to spray him as he comes from a very dry region of australia the only water he would need is a small water bowl as they do drink from time to time, and the moisture he would get from his food either live or veggies, remember the saying you are what you eat well in a beardies case this is very true, so always make sure the live food, is gut loaded on a healthy diet.
Sorry for the essay but hope that it helps

I'll try and answer your questions reptilemadd :)

Firstly I stopped feeding the large insects, i'll wait now for the small silent crickets.
2/ It runs the entire length of the viv , not sure of the Uv% all I can say i was a special tube for reptiles.
3\I'll have to get a mutli vitamin..calciun I tend to only use once a week.

The ambient temp was taken from the hot end..the house never drops below 21.5..I don't do cold lol
4\ Parasites, possibly if Beardies can get snake mites, as both snakes have them, being treated. He hasn't been wormed, got him on the 10th at around 6wks old.

He is definately lively, I took him out on my lap and without warning he jumped and landed half way down the stairs..what a fright, I picked him up and he's uninjured and was quite happy to hop back on my fingers after returning him to his viv.

Hi Janie, by parasites I ment internal they all have them but sometimes they get excessive amounts due to stress or from the feeder insects, he will need calcium every day (five days out of seven) since hes still so young he's got a lot of growing to do and without enough calcium he could end up with MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease), nutrobol is a good multivitamin and as far as the Uv goes he needs a minimum 10% but the best one is an arcadia 12%D3+

Oh and no Beardies can't get snake mites as far as I know...

After nigh on a week of worry and spending a fortune on butterworms and silkworms, the small silent crickets I bought off ebay arrived.
He was hidden in his foliage, so I fished him out and placed the tup in the viv..he perked up and chased, ate around 15 but they are tiny crickets. I wanted him to get his confidence back with the small ones, next time i'll get the mediums they are still pretty small.

I think it funny that the reptile I have that is known to be a finicky eater has never refused a meal..the Royal Python, then this little blighter is the fussiest critter I have ever known!

Janie, our beardies seem to grow fussy with time and food, seems they lap up the crickets for a good few months but then become bored with them so we alternate between hoppers and the silent crickets with occasional waxworm & mealworm treats. We give calcium with every feed, the bugs go in a bag with a sprinkle of calcium, shake the bag and shove em in.

Its horrible having non eating pets :( hope your beardie is feeling better soon :)

lol Carly..he sat on his bark this morning waiting for me to open the lid of the small silents..then he hops half way in the tub to stuff as many as he can down his throat. I'll add calci to the 2nd feed :)
Now he's chasing down the escapees, I forgot to put them in the fridge for a few mins.

I guess he expects breakfast in bed!

Thats Great news JanieW just to be on the safe side though I'd stick with the small ones for now while he's eating with a passion, and just to make sure he gets calcium it might be better to put it on his first feed, I know what you mean about so called (fussy eaters) I think beardies are much worse than royals lol, mines the same as carlycorns goes wild for crickets hoppers or roaches nut only for a couple of weeks at a time, it's the same with his salad/veggies. wait till next winter when he brumates he might not eat for about four months...
