i have had my royal almost 3 weeks she is a cb11, how long usually does it take for them to get used to being handled? she still can be a little nervous when i go to get her out but once out after 5 mins or so she starts moving around.

its more the when i go to get her out she goes into the s shape and looks like she might strike, she hasnt yet but looks like she might.

Yes, as Blackskull says, they are a nervous snake. The wincing away and the 'S' shape is typical of royals, even when they know you well. It doesn't mean the snake will bite, although it can well be a danger sign in other snakes. With royals I think the 'S' means - 'do I know you?' All you can do is just to pick the snake up as it is, balled, and presently it will start to peep out of its coils, a tongue will flick, and the royal is ready to make friends. As you've found, a few more minutes and your royal will be very lively indeed.

I find snakes can go through phases - they'll have weeks of being really friendly and begging to come out, and then they'll have a stage of 'do I know you?' again. Makes life interesting lol.
