that was the last locust but ive got a little colony of mealworms for food. shes been on the Vermiculite for 16 years so a few more weeks aint going to be a problem. im looking for a small fish tank or something similar to give here a bit more space even though they dont really do anything. i made her a hide out of a plant pot but all she does is look at it |

There are always tanks and terrariums etc on preloved and gumtree, might be able to pick up a bargain. As far as I know they aren't ridiculously priced at PAH either. |

think its going to be a long time before i try an hold the spider. she scared the crap out of me when she ran in my direction after a mealworm. may have to get a spiderling an get used to handling smaller one first rather than jump straight in with holding the big hairy bitey looking one |

Aren't spiderlings faster? I met a tarantula today for the first time and he was full grown, and he just ambled out to see what was going on; he was so placid; I didn't get to hold him but it must be like picking up a small furry animal rather than a spider.
Sadly the little guy is nearing the end of his life - I never knew it but once males reach maturity, they don't live long, whereas the females can live to 30 ...and go on taking toyboys for mating, presumably! |

not sure if their faster but would be more confident holding a little one first as bearnadette is about 5" across. yea the males only live between 4 an 7 years i think. bearnadette is 16 so a few more years to go |

Yes I'm afraid a spiderling will be a lot faster if it needed to be, adults don't need to be quick since they have size on their side lol, I held an adult last year and I have to say they are amazing, they don't get that heavy given their size but I could hardly tell she was on my hand..... |

Ahh I may be of assistance for the substrate. Chileans like it dry, very dry. You have to add water to get this stuff to expand but once its expanded grab clumps and squeeze any excess water out then stick it in the oven at 100oC go in and give it a twizzle every 10 minutes or so and once it stops steaming loads as you stir it up its about ready. Leave it to sit out and cool and bobs your fathers brother. If you give it a good layer at least three times as deep as the spider is tall, give her the chance to burrow if she wants.
On the spiderling front they are MUCH MUCH faster than adults but this doesnt make adults slow either lol. I absolutely love my juveniles, they are all bigger than slings now even the Salmon Pink who moulted again last night. They arent in my opinion handleable animals, they will always be a bit unpredictable. |

Nice one, did you find it amazing how light they are for their size and how delicately they place each leg down?
Just a thought but is your wire mesh a bit big, they have the ability to squeeze down, their exo is soft. |

yes was amazing how light they are. their feet feel like velcro when the hold on. did hold her again today when i put some more substrate in the tank but used a glove again as she reared up an made me a little nervious.
the holes in the mesh are 2cm, could she get through that? |
