I ask this to settle a conflict of ideas between myself and my husband, Steve reckons that everybody at some time will be bitten by an adult snake. It was sparked by that Anaconda article lol
Is he right?
Not that it'll make any difference, he is quite fond of our two, tho he hates to admit it..a guy thing |

Yes he's right, never buy a snake unless you're 100% prepared to be tagged by it's adult form ^^ Even the tamest snake one day is bound to tag you either from a feeding response or handling too roughly or taking him by surprise or he's shedding and isn't feeling too happy about being touched. Snakes are very "in the moment" so one day he'll be tame and fine the next he might be moody and then the next fine again ^^ Just something that you should always be ready for :)
I've never been bitten by an adult yet only babies and juveniles, not looking forward to an adult tag ^^ Nor looking forward to my big boa either! :O |

Thanks Kelf :)
Wasn't exactly what i'd wished to hear, but I guess in my heart I knew that one day it could happen or rather likely to. So as an adult, if he hisses it'd be foolhardy to press the point and go for the pick up. |

Duke has been very close to biting me in the face once. My own fault I scared him (which is understanding, it was my face). Sanke will bite anything that moves when its feeding time. My corn has struck at me mouth closed, my Gecko has bit me. The only animal in my house that is I can almost definitely say will not bite me is my scorpion, unfortunately it pinches and stings instead.
Its never as bad as you think it will be though, they strike fast, so fast you will not react until its over. |

Hey you aren't supposed to 2nd guess replies yanno! Particularly mine :P However weren't gonna say that anyway lol
A fast strike and its over is ok(ish), I think his fear is that an eight foot snake would bite and hang on. I saw the fangs on Pandora..don't fancy those sunk into my flesh. Yeow |

This is something i have thought about too, i was tagged by my george when he was younge and touch wood he didnt like the taste.
i think what worries me most is what will happen once he has tagged, cause i can be quite jumpy at times so i would be more scared of dropping the poor thing.
like kelf says they live in the moment and i think we should too, then if it happens it happens.
when i got tagged by george it actually relaxed me somewhat because the "waiting for it to happen" factor had gone, but then he was only a baby at the time

I had my adult female (2.3kg) tag me in a feeding response, bled like hell, and hurt a fair bit, but more down to shock I think lol |

I got bit by a wild Adder as a child, was very painful and I thought my leg was about to drop off but I'm OK now. I know for a fact that my snakes cant inflict anything like that on me so I am just not worried. I was bitten by a gerbil as a kid too, it was so ridiculously painful but I survived again.
A bite from a fully grown Boa is going to hurt, there is no way round that fact, think been punched by Chuck Norris with a fist covered in glass. If they hang on you just have to relax wherever its got you once it realises your not food it will let go. Defensive strikes are over in a split second so before you know its happened you'll be away washing your bloody hand and thinking that the bite marks will be a cool story to tell at work. |

Firstly a huge thankyou to everybody that replied, and after reading every post I have reached a conclusion.
I have just watched 'Project Nim' that helped make my mind up:
Now I realise that my ideals won't guarantee never being bitten, but I will not be the antagonist If on a particular day either Fea or Slinky shows signs of being defensive, aggressive unless for health reasons I will leave them alone, they can't ask in our language, but we can read their body language. To quote Kelf

Personally if I went ahead and picked them up regardless, that would be purely for my ego and not the snake's wellbeing.
I do want to make it clear that I do not mean this to frown upon anybody. Everybody has their own views and I know that everybody here cares deeply for their snakes, I also realise that my knowledge falls far short of those that have replied
I just know that in the past I have done many a foolish thing, simply to face my fears..things like abseiling down 230m into a cave, riding a motorbike in driving snow when I could have stayed home. So now I have no intensions of ignoring Fea when he clearly wishes to be left alone, just to prove to myself 'hey i'm not afraid of you' when I would be at that moment lol |

even when mine have an off day and hiss when I approach, they are ok once picked up, I think its mainly a problem when they have their brains locked into feeding mode |
