I think they're fighting ...like in this vid of 2 male adders ...see how each of them keeps trying to keep his head above the other one's ...fascinating!

Wow - that was vicious - one was biting the other's head! I thought snake fighting rituals were pretty harmless so as to preserve the males for more enjoyable activities lol.

My money's still on fighting though. Those are two male adders 'dancing' - there are huge variations in adder colouration but females are much darker; never realised how showy the males are till I saw that vid.

yes is a bit vicious. good point i forgot the females are darker than males.
would love to see some adders in the wild. my mum has seen some in the woods where we walk the dogs but ive not had chance to see them yet

Oh same here - there's a 'country park' near Wakefield (used to be the site of a coal mine - sign of the times) where adders are apparently seen regularly - wish it was convenient to travel to; I'd be there every day.
