The other day I noticed Juju was going dull and getting ready to shed, so I opened a pack of exo terra moss, and put some in a tub with some warm water and put it in his viv. I went to check on him the next day and theres all these little black bugs (not snake mites) crawling around the viv. I had just cleaned it out the week before, but I Took Juju out and had to do it all again making sure i got rid of all the nasty buggers! Ive put him back in, and there doesnt seem to be any of them left, but I could do with using the moss as he is rubbish at shedding. Ive gone with the damp flannel method for now.
Has anyone else had this problem when putting moss in? have the bugs been nesting in the moss?

Yuk, sounds like it's stagnant - does it smell like (please excuse the elegant phrasing) eggy farts? The smell will go if you dry it out but you don't want it dry lol. I'd personally use a damp flannel or kitchen roll, but the good news is that the bugs are probably compost gnats or springtails or similar tiny critters, and totally harmless to the snake. I get a lot of compost gnats when I bring geraniums in in the autumn to overwinter; I sort of get used to them, and they die out anyway as the geraniums need to be kept drier in cold weather. So your little visitors should disappear once the shed is over and the viv reverts to normal humidity.

Yeah, it stinks lol. Dont know how Juju is supposed to put up with that, i couldnt! He's made some unpleasant smells in his time, but nothing like this moss. Glad theres nothing to worry about, but its a bit annoying. Will be reluctant to use moss again.

I squeeze my moss in to little packets and store in the freezer, then when needed I remove a packet & defrost with boiling water. Both the freezer & boiling water should kill bugs and make sure it doen't go stagnant.
