Hi Guys,
Just heard monty making all sorts of noises banging about his viv. I looked over and he was kinking his neck and his mouth was wide open. He ate 4 days ago and he just regurged the rest of the rat.
His current warm end temp is 33c. He has been in the same set up for the past 8 months without any changes:
He weighed 770g last time i weighed him on 14/01/2012 and is aprox 3.5 foot long.
He is in a 4 foot viv (heavily decorated to avoid too much open space)
He is showing no signs of an RI and his mouth looks a good colour and clear.
I have no clues about what it could be. He is due another feed in 2 days but I am going to give him a week to recover.
The question is should I get him to a vet straight away based on the regurge or should I just monitor him and see how he goes with his next feed.

You'll need to give 2 weeks before you feed next, allow his stomach to settle (flora and acids, etc blah blah). How much of the rat was still recognisable, I would have thought it would be goo by day 4. If its not then in my opinion the rat was either too big or the snake was too cold and he has had to bring it back up before it went bad/toxic.
I'm thinking/guessing because of the 4 foot span of the vivarium the warm end and cold end are a fair distance apart he has settled himself in the cool end and not dared to go get warm and cross the vivarium. What is your ambient temperature, your hot spot temp is good (I use 32-33oC) so maybe because its been seriously cold in the UK this week its just been a bit cold in the vivarium in general and its just tipped the balance enough to slow digestion. |

I think the main thing is to rest his stomach and feed a smaller prey item ...imo would do this for the next 2 or 3 feeds, won't hurt.
It's true that it's harder to maintain a temp gradient in a 4' viv, but Shahi and Shiva have 4' vivs, and while 'the Shah' is currently fasting, Shiva's still scarfing down his rats ...I provide a middle hide in addition to hot and cold hide, so they have a choice, and they use them - no problem thermoregulating.

Yeah it was pretty much goo just looked like a small white sausage. I will hold off feeding for 2 weeks and try smaller food items as recommended. I have also added a makeshift (cereal box) hide in the middle of the viv so he can choose a mid temp rather than just the cool or warm end.
The rat was the same size he has been on for a few months now so i think it has just been too cold during the night. at the moment his cool end is 23C but I havent checked what it drops to at night.
As always thanks for the advice guys. I am sure he will be fine and I'll keep you updated. It just caught me off guard actually seeing a regurge.

| Yeah saw him bring it up. It was more a light pink/grey colour but definately a light colour. |

Oh yukky.
Its probably the cold issue then overnight. Keep a tabs on the temperatures throught the day etc and maybe you'll see a drop in temp. 23oC is just a bit cold in my opinion but the hot end temp is fine so he should have moved up to that end so maybe look into why he didn't too. |
