Hi, I've just fed Kane and before he actually started eating he dragged his dinner all around his viv, which he doesn't normally do but in doing so he'd got some substrate on it and swallowed a bit which im not really worried about but he'd also caught some in his mouth and he was rubbing his head on everything to try and get it out... 5 minutes later he yawned and i couldn't see it any more but i don't know for definite if he managed to remove it, can it cause him harm if he didn't? |

If it was only a little bit then should b ok. I'd just keep eye on him to make sure he is ok. If he starts dragging the food around every time u feed him from now on I'd probably feed him in a seperate tub to make sure he doesn't swallow it every week mate |

I see from your sig that he's on aspen - I used to be really paranoid about this stuff but mine have done the same as Kane, despite trying to keep them away from it, and so far so good. I think he'd have to be very unlucky for it to cause any harm - as has been said they can digest teeth and bones and claws - rat claws are a great deal sharper than aspen, they're like needles. I once heard of a colubrid getting a bit caught in his gum and it causing an infection but that really was bad luck; I reckon Kane will be fine. |

It was enough to cause his mouth to stay open a little but when he yawned and shut his mouth he could close it fully and i couldnt see any substrate at all, im gonna start feeding him in a separate tub from now on anyway's cause im a bit worried to be honest now... Can it cause mouth rot...? |

I only ever heard of the one case - and I really do think that was unusual. I keep an eye on mine as they feed mainly in-viv, but they've always been ok. When I got Ziska a year ago she was only a tiddler and very fierce - she insisted on dragging her prey down into a tunnel of aspen ...when you think of what they ingest in the wild with prey, the odd wisp of aspen's not too bad. |

he should remove most of it himself an if hes swollowed a little he will be fine. my rat snake got some stuck in the roof of his mouth an it caused a little bit of mouth rot but that was just bad luck an probly something stupid like a million to 1 chance of it acctually getting stuck where it was |

Ah, that's not aspen is it? Is it that coco fibre stuff? It looks a lot softer than aspen - I reckon he ought to be fine. |

if left un treated it can get really bad. i only noticed when jeffs mouth looked a bit swollen. cleaned his mouth with a damp cotton bud an gently removed the white plaque type build up, cleaned his mouth daily with watered down listerine original an it cleared up lovely. i would not worry though as it was a fluke chance it got stuck there |

Ok I'll keep an eye on him I'd rather not have to put my hand near his mouth... He gets angry when you go near his head lol |
