I realise that at the moment I couldn't participate in such a scheme, as one of my snakes has mites; however, the mites do seem to be decreasing dramatically (touch wood!) and in a couple of months I'd like to think that I could share cheap frozen rodents with members of TRP in my area.
Reading about the price of rats today I was scandalised. I know my local rep shop used to charge 50p each for a mouse pinkie.
In the next week or two I'll be ordering the following, probably from TSM. A&N are marginally cheaper but tend to be out of stock, so I'll quote TSM prices -
50 small mice for £15 50 medium mice for £20 100 ex-breeder (or large/jumbo) mice for £64 50 mixed size rat weaners for £38 50 small rats for £49 and possibly some rat pups if these are in stock
Delivery is free for orders over £125. So no delivery charge.
These prices, compared with the very greedy shop prices I've observed, are great, although you do need a large freezer (and I realise the electricity to run it) and also a large number of snakes to eat up the rodents before their sell-by date.
Wouldn't it be a good idea if we could establish a network on TRP to share deliveries of frozen rodents, ensuring low prices, high turnover and freshness of food?
I for one would only charge the same as TSM or A&N and, in future deliveries once mite free, would have some freezer space to accommodate the odd extra pack of rodents until collection, as long as this was asap after delivery.
I'm in Wakefield, very close to the centre. Would be great if we could establish a scheme like this nationally.

Hi, Sevens - ha, Castleford, a neighbour lol - so if my maths is right, you're paying a lot more for your mice - TSM market medium, regular and ex breeder - price list below -
http://www.tsmreptiles.co.uk/page72.html
Gives weights too.
I've just found another pack of large mice in my cellar freezer (as opposed to upstairs current-rodent freezer) which means I won't have to order for another month (corns were eating me out of mouse and home lol) by which time I ought to have a better idea of whether I'm mite free or not (do hope I am) and will let you know when I intend to order and you can tell me what rodents you need and we can take it from there.

Yeah pretty much neighbours in the grand scheme of things it seems!
I'm not sure what the price of weaner rats is there, but as much as I'm an advocate of supporting independent businesses, I don't expect to have my pants pulled down for it either - so I may be very much interested in lightening your load should you have an excess.
I only have Monty (for now - watch this space) so my demand isn't much, I only buy 4 at a time! |

Yes BATs, I have mentioned this a few times, but most of us are too far away to make it feasible ;( I am in SE London and there is only Mystra that is sort of near me |

Ah well, that's cool - will let you know when I order and when it's safe, mite-wise, to call on Bats' Belfry - although in view of petrol costs you might like to stock up on a few more, but even so at 25p per medium mouse that's got to be better value than £1 - robbing so-and-sos!
Hi Mark - yes, it's a question of who's where, but would be good to get a network going and even if it meant travelling a bit to collect rodents, could still prove cheaper - amazed there aren't more members in yours and Mystra's areas though - unless I've been influenced by Essex Jungle lol - brilliant series! |

Out of interest; how long can you freeze prey for??
I think points of view vary a bit on this - I reckon up to 6 months on average, as long as the rodent was in good fresh condition on arrival (never any complaints re TSM or A&N) but far less for pinkies and fuzzies and possibly a bit more for bigger rodents ...I've known me keep meat in the freezer for longer than that but of course the rodents have still got all their guts intact.
If someone was really particular they might recommend a shorter keeping time, but at present I'm using the last of a batch I got last Oct and they're fine - but I have a few pinks left over and they're suffering freezer burn now. |
