Hi all the new royal is still all hissy when i go near her so am just wondering how many of you have royals that hiss? Its just a basic leave me alone thing isn't it?

Apart from in the shop I've only handled her once at home and that was a quick, i couldn't resist hold :) she's about 5 months old, i think... When should she settle down? She's a pain! Lol just not sure what to do considering its still to early to handle her?

Hi, that's the thing, im not put off i just don't know what to do about it cause I've only had her a week so its a bit early for regular handling... When she's out of the hide, which is quite a bit so she seems settled i put my hand in and stroke her and i did the whole sock thing aswell.

probly just a hissy little madam. she will calm down with regular handling.
to be honest none of my snakes had a full week to settle in.
needed moving for cleaning, better housing, checking them over etc an theyve all been fine even the grumpy rat snake tamed down an the previous owner hardly ever handled him

I'd get handling if I were you. Oscar was only left a couple of days and he's fine. I know they recommend leaving them, but sometimes, needs must and it won't do her any harm.

Still lots to learn.

How is hissypants feeding? If its eating with no issues I dont think handling would cause any problems. If its not eating as well as the hissing then it could be down to been stressed then I'd recommend allowing more time to settle and maybe even cover most of the front of the vivarium to keep things quiet and calm.

Duke hisses, not so much these days but on occasion he'll give me a blast of the old psssssssssst but its not followed up by any aggression but if Duke does hiss I do tend to leave him alone as I know he is handleable most of the time so I grant him his request for peace when he asks for it. Sanke hisses around food, sometimes with a gob full which is impressive. I actually like a snake with a warning signal built in, its the quiet ones you have to watch is what they say lol.

She refused a feed again today but was a lot friendlier and let me pick her up and hold her with no hissing or defensiveness... She was a little unsettled while she was out though.

has she acctually taken a feed with you?
if not might be better to leave her 5 days then offering a rat, get something in her an go from there.
most on here advise to leave them for 3 feeds to settle i know i said that ive not done that but i may have just been lucky that they settled an fed although the bull snakes missed on or 2 feeds at first

My royal hissed once after 2 weeks after I got her she went into shed, I read some where that it was a bluff so I just picked her up. I thought well what the hell if you get tagged sh*t happens, she never struck & has never done so. i have had her 6 months and no aggression since :)
