Hi

Firstly, I'm not planning to rush out and buy another snake, I'm still learning with the one I've got, but I am tempted to look for something bigger maybe later in the year / next year. Burms and retics are pretty much out as they're *huge* when adult, but I do quite like the look of a couple of the boas. Commons and Dumeril's have particularly attractive markings and seem to be a good size ie large but not man-eating.

So, what are they like to keep? I've had a look through several care sheets and it looks as though their requirements are not too far from that of a Royal, although recommended viv sizes have ranged from five to eight feet. I'd consider it pretty much essential for me to see an adult before taking one on as I know they're still a large snake and I'd much rather find out exactly how large it's likely to get before buying one. We're planning to attend at least one of the reptile shows listed on here, do you think there may be some adults?

<edit> If anyone wants to tell me that I'm too inexperienced and to stick to something smallish like Royals, feel free I won't be offended.

Royals aren't necessarily easy so if you can get them right chances are you can get another species' requirements right too.
as you might have a guessed i'm a huge Dumerils fan placid temperaments, straight-forward care as per BCI/BCC with no humidity issues and they're classed as 'medium sized' boas being around the 6-7 feet mark as adults so handleable by one person.

Dumerils boas, BCO hybrids, Sinder Hypo boas, cornsnakes, ratsnakes, Day Geckos

Thanks GP. I think it may have been your Dumeril's pictures that attracted me to them. How easy are they to get hold of?

Dumeril's are available but not so much as BCI/BCCs, but to me that just makes them more desirable, I would recommend going to a shop that has adult snakes in and handling one or two just to get a feel for it.
I must warn you though - I recently went and saw a adult dumeril's and promptly fell in love with it, but I couldn't afford it which was really annoying.

I can see your point about Burms and Retics but don't rule out some of the dwarf locality retics, I think Kayuadi and Kalatoa (sp?) are the smaller two.

Common boas do get pretty big but Dumeril's, as GP said, are a medium boid. perfect for what you are looking for imo.

It sounds like a Dumeril's will be ideal, but I'll definitely look at the dwarf retics. Just need to see if there will be room for a second viv once we've had the living room re done.

Talk to Reptiles Ink both on here and the dark side, he keeps retics and is a helpful guy.

Retics and burms are really the dogs bits.
Both are available in a dwarf form but prices on dwarf burms are still high for now, I have a project lined up with them but it will be a year or two yet until I have any for sale.
Dwarf retics are great but can be very fast so if speed puts you off then they wont be for you.

Plenty of Retics and Burms

Aren't Dwarf Retics still capable of hitting 15'?

Some can get to that size but generally up to 10 foot depending on the type, plus they are much more slender than burms so a lot easier to lift etc.
I have madu's that will be at least 5 years old and only about 6 to 7 foot.

Plenty of Retics and Burms

Don't get me wrong, I think burms and retics are amazing but they're far bigger than I'd be comfortable with. Something that's likely to not exceed 7' is more the kind of size I'd be looking for.

Will it be OK in a four foot viv?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I've just seen some Dums for sale on the dark side. I also saw an adult at Newquay zoo recently, obviously I didn't get to handle him (booo!) but he was a lovely looking snake and looked to be about the size I had in mind.

The OH has given permission for another snake as long as the viv isn't going to exceed five feet, which is about as big as we can realistically fit into the living room. Hopefully in two to three months the builders will have gone and I can start looking in earnest!

I can put you in touch with a Dums breeder that is expecting some pretty soon if you want. Same breeder that The Hoff originated from. All above board, CITES certificated, etc.

Blackburn but can organise a courier if that's too far away from you. I can't remember whereabouts in the UK you are based.

Blackburn's about two hours away, so it's not too far to drive down.

Ok mate. I'll speak to her if you want me to and find out when they will be ready. That's assuming that they have been born because her female was looking like she was gonna burst last time I spoke to her. Let me know either way mate.

Yes please, that would be great. There's no rush, so if she's expecting some but they won't be ready for a few months that's not a problem. Likewise the OH has given her blessing for a faun or RUB to live on top of Princess' viv while it's a wee'un.
