I find, with an obstinate snake, that the best way to get it to move, is to tickle its tail. If you can reach the tail with your hand, just gently play about with just the tip of it, and the snake should move forward. If the tail's inaccessible, then use something like a feather duster, artificial flower stem, long handled plastic or wooden spoon, to do the same.
If no luck, you may just have to sit and wait with the beverage of your choice to pass the time on ...

I'm just amazed at how strong he is! I had a really good grip of the lower third of his body when I spotted where he was heading, but I just could not pull him back without risking hurting him - he just expands his body and locks himself in place, and moves the next section forward.
