I would personally think that would be okay - but give him loads of hides and cover, especially in view of the rough time he's had. And don't worry if he just goes to ground and doesn't come out much; royals love privacy and dimness.
However, do you mean 'tank' as in fish tank, or as in wooden vivarium? If a glass or plastic tank, this won't keep the heat in as well, and will need covering on the top and back and sides to create the necessary dimness beloved by royals. But it can work, with necessary adjustments.(Sorry if you meant vivarium lol.)
Congrats on the rescue, glad he's found a good owner.
Ah Chris we overlapped lol. |

What do you mean by mistreated?? Some would say 4foot is on the large side, especially if he is quite a shy little guy, but as BATS said, it can be made to work with lots of hides and coverage. Also, again if glass, getting the heat gradient can be tricky - you might want to consider putting the heat lamp (ceramic / IR) in the middle to maintain a high enough temp on the cold end of the scale.
Good luck :) |

hi guys thanks for all the help yea it is a glass tank but its covered on the top with wood, and he has a big house to hide in as well as a lot of bark to hide under and a few trees to climb over, he is all good now smashing rats away like mad, as i hate rats, lol but we all got to make changes. he was owned by a guy who had him as a trophy pet never fed and lived in a plastic box full of molding bark, and old skin.not good but cleaned him up and he is happy now with the new name of Ralph lol . |

if your keeping it in a viv/glass tank then personally i would just go for a ceramic/ir bulb as you would need to change to one of these as the snake gets bigger. heat mats are only suitable for young royals or used under rubs. heavy bodied snakes can cause thermal blocking if they are in direct contact with heat mats and the mat can become faulty and reach dangerous temps even when stated |

heat mats also are contact heaters so they wouldn't heat the air to give you the ambient air temps you require for royals |
