hi everyone my name is Michaela
im new to snakes all together my finance is in the army and he has had snakes for years but has moved to a new camp and can no longer keep snakes so i have a new pet
we have an 18 month Royal Python we named him Jai, hes an absolutly beautiful snake i never thort i cud handel a snake but jai is a great pet the only problem i have is feeding time! i have done it for a few weeks with my partner being away and hes off to Afghanistan for 4 months im really nervous when it comes to feeding Jai and its the only downfall of having him im hoping that in time i will get over my nerves
i was just wondering if anyone has any techinques that i could use when its feeding time or do you have to feed him with the tongs? i think its just how quick he strikes that shocks me which makes me nervous... hes getting alot bigger in the few months we have had him so thinking of feeding him two mice now but really gota get over my nerves cos i dont want it to affect Jai feeding
any help or ideas would be soo much appreciated
thanks Michaela |

hi and welcome to the forum. my strike feeders still make me jump every now and then but you do get used to it. mine also spend a little while looking at the rat before striking, as if they are deciding weather its my hand or food. |

Thanks blackskull, I think I'm becoming obsessed lol, looking at different sites, because I didn't set up his tank am wondering whether my temp in the tank is correct cos the light never seems to go off at all is this ok or am I making the tank too hot? As u have probably realised I am very inexperienced in all of this |

my royals are kept at 26c cold end and 32c hot end measured with digital thermometers, all my heating is done by ceramic bulbs connected to pulse stats. what type of stat and bulb are you using to heat the viv? if you are measuring the temps using the stat the dials on these are not accurate, you should always check temps with digital thermometers to temp guns |

is it one of those stick on round thermometers? if it is im afraid they are pants. you dont need both a heat mat and a bulb, personally i would ditch the mat and just use a bulb. your best bulb options are either ir or ceramic, if it is already a red bulb there is a chance its an ir bulb but i don't use them myself. for a light emitting bulb you best off using a dimmer stat, this will bring the viv up to temp then hold stable temps (after a bit of tweaking)
also heat mats in vivs are not good for heavy bodied snakes (that is if you are using it in the viv) as the weight of the snake on the mat can cause the mat to fail (thermal blocking) even when connected to a stat and can reach dangerous temps.
hope that make some sort of sense to you |

Thanks yeah it's a red bulb one am using now but I find jai sits on the heat matt and in the morning he's in the cooler spot I think when my partner cums up before afghan I'm going to make sure I know everything that concerns jai so I can look after him the best possible way, thanks so much for your advice |

if you switch to ir or ceramic the heating is left on 24/7 so you have no worries about them getting cold. i only use ceramic as most of my snakes are in our bedroom and i wouldn't be able to sleep with the light from an ir bulb |

Hi and welcome to the forum
For a good accurate thermometer/hydrometer have a look on eBay, someone posted a link on here the other week recharging ceramic bulbs at a good price. The same seller also does combo thermo/hydro for about £3 delivered
Edit; link to eBay http://bit.ly/JOSuAK
I've had mine running for a while now and they're very useful
