Hello people, Me and the girlfriend shall soon be getting our own place, which in turn means more space, I think you know where I'm going with this lol. Well we both agreed at some point we would like a boa, either a brb or a bci. Just wondering, from a hatchling at what age are they considered fully grown? And how big are we looking, for males and females? And at what size vivs would I need as they grow? Thanks for taking the time to read :). |

My Boa Fea who I call Furby is just a puppy..he's a common mexican and 'shouldn't' grow much over 5' I recently moved him into a 55" viv, which is fine as he spends most of the time curled round his branch. Or snuggled up with me..he likes a human pillow lol He is adorable and I love him to pieces :)

Thanks, how old is he? I'm sure I could make space for a larger viv. I never considered a boa before I joined here. But everytime i see pics of fea, pandora and William I just want one a little bit more lol |

He's about 8 mnths old now..I promise you'll never regret getting a Boa..of all my snakes he is my fav and the least active when out..all he wants to do is find a comfy spot on me or hubby, then he rests his chin and sleeps lol Mind saying that he was naughty when he managed to get on top of the fridge..to the back. Had to dismantle the rear panel to get him out..just an inch gap between the fridge and breakfast bar. |

He does look ever so content on you everytime I see him! Oh naughty boy! My smee somehow managed to get through a gap and behind my girlfriends dvd cabinet. Which happens to be nailed to the wall! I don't know how he got through. I could barely get my little finger through! Luckily for me there was one section that wasnt nailed and he was under there. Got me into trouble though the little git as my girlfriend wasn't to chuffed about me dismantling her furniture at gone 11oclock at night lol |

It does very much depend which locale you choose as to how big they can get. I have a Hogg Island Boa, she is just over 4 foot and a year old, I suspect she will be about 5-6 foot as an adult but Hogg's are heavier in the body than some 'dwarf' species, she is already pushing a kilo and so strong its incredible. Hogg's are very well known for their feistyness when they are little, Sanke tested my reflexes a few times but now she is calm and just a wonderful snake to handle, and because she is a Hogg she will get big but manageable, and just in case you need any further reasons to choose a Hogg:
THEY ARE STUNNING! |

Thanks chris. I think the mrs, as much as she loves snakes, would prefer to get a male. Sankes gorgeous bob and that's quite a more manageable size, I'm totally torn to be honest. I heard boas can be nippy as hatchlings but I'm more than prepared to put myself through a few nips! |

They can be nippy but its nothing to put you off they all grow out of it and a lot of their strikes are bluffs (a lot arent though lol). I have held a few BRB babies and every single one has nipped me or the shop owner, Sanke has tried a few times but never actually got me which I'm sure she could have if she actually wanted to. The one thing that amazes me is the intelligence in their eyes, they aren't looking at you they are watching you, taking it all in and thinking it through, though Sanke goes silly around food, it just makes it more fun. |

Lol I'll take my chances I think. I just love that blue tint you get on the brbs, but I am more swayed to a bci, they do sound a lot of fun and I like the idea of a big cuddly teddy bear of a snake lol |

Only thing I'll say is be careful if you get a biggie, I always say two people to handle Pandora but honestly I've never actually done that until last week when she gotta little too tight around my neck and I couldn't call for help I had to lay down and let her make her way off and I'm not too man to say I was genuinely shaken up she went straight back into the viv and I had a stiff drink. I didn't bother making a thread as I dont like the anti snake brigade getting more ammunition but it did really make me worry about how lightly the strength of a fully grown female boa is taken. |

Damn you blackskull. I was struggling enough as it is lol. Lovely Boa though :). Yea I've been reading up on them kelf and read that you should have two people to handle an adult. Oh dear! Can't imagine how scary that must of been. Was that her securing herself? Did the stiff drink do the trick? Even though it's a hatchling I'd be getting, I know a guy that has a few fair sized females. Do you think it would benefit me to go round to his place and handle a couple, to kinda get a feel for a larger snake? |

Absolutely, more practice is better and throwing yourself in the deep end with a big boa keeps you on your toes my first snake that wasnt a royal was an eight foot female hahaha. And yes she gets very scared when she is first taken out of her viv and like a scared toddler she holds onto me very very tightly, I normally sit straight down with her and wait ten minutes fit her to finally let go but this week I was inpatient. Stupid move putting her around my shoulders anyway lol |

lol glad i could make your decision a bit more difficult
yeah i would say it would benefit you to have a handle of larger ones, would give you an idea of weight and strength |

Lol bless her. I like the comparison to a toddler! That's exactly how it is. Lol blackskull, I shall see about going round sometime. The biggest snake I've handled so far is a 4.5 ft corn lol |
