I am so worried that Ra will refuse his mouse tomorrow. It all started when his eyes cleared and he started to shed, it was a bad shed and his skin stuck in patches all over him. He refused his first 2 feeds, then we bathed him and a day later he refused again.

He last ate on the 8th so its only been 8 days, but he only weighs 38g and he's 7 or 8 mnths old.
He has fed 3 times since I had him, so I shouldn't be as worried as I am. His skin is clear now with no stuck pieces, so i'm hoping he eats.

Its after my little Casper refused every meal and then died.

I am terrified that its happening again.

Thanks Ajo, I hope so..I have an irrational fear that he won't eat..and I can't shake it.

Its not, its as simple as that, poor Casper was an unfortunate thing to happen but its a rare thing to happen. Its understandable that you are worried that history might repeat itself but I can pretty much put my life savings on it not been the case. Some snakes are picky eaters, and during shedding not one single one of mine will eat so its not that he cant eat, he just didn't fancy it with other stuff going on. I feel confident he will eat now everything is more settled, if not dont fret, just give him a week without handling etc to just chill out on his own and try again.

Thanks Bats,

he still has two tiny pieces of skin behind his head , I put kitchen roll down but he's so busy trying to get out he didn't even sniff the mouse. I left it in and covered the faun, so i'll look in an hour.
I don't get it, he took his first 3 feeds no problem.

This is snakes for you, I'm afraid.

At least you know he's had some grub since he arrived - hang on to that. He isn't another Casper.

Also you've got a safety net - the shop sounds very good and as a last resort they can take him and get him to feed or even show you how to assist, but that of course is the worst case scenario. But no way do you have to watch that snake starve.

When Shiloh came to me she didn't eat for a month - and she was as tiny, if not tinier, than Ra. I had to assist her with bits of mouse tail - the smallest pinky was way too big for assisting. I had to do this 3 times - THEN she ate her first pink unassisted, and has never refused since. The other day I moved the great lolloping lump into her full-size viv.

They worry the hell out of us, but as Bob says, Casper's case was very very rare. Ra's definitely not going to fade away just yet, although personally I'd cut out the handling and just let him chill for a while until he feeds again.

And having said that, do hope you get a nice surprise when you check him again - no mouse and a bulgy Ra!

Thanks Bats :)

I got so wound up I called my herp vet, he's out on call but was told my call was recorded and that she'd get him to call back.
I havn't handled him since his bath but that's easier said thsn done when he gets out everytime I take the lid off to change water lol

I had a look in through the clear side and he's curled up and was moving..i'll leave it a couple of hours before checking the mouse..if still there i'll take it out.

Its only 11 days since he ate, but seems a year..*sighs* but you are right, Casper was a sad rarity.

11 days? That's nothing, truly, even for a little tiddler like him.

If he's curled up and moving ...could he be taking down his mouse?

If not, you could always try leaving it in overnight with him in his cool side. He might take it in the small hours.

Good luck - fingers crossed.

I would leave it in, but gotta go over to my mum's tonight, so won't be home until late afternoon..that's 24hrs it would be ok until morning. I think i'll remove it before we go.

Just weighed Slinky, 402g..he's growing fast now

I'm sure its technique rather than medical.

Where does Ra live, what size etc?

He's in an 18" faun with heat mat and mat stat..I think maybe I found the cause. He still has a few flakes of skin stuck behind his head, but I think the eyecaps remain, in fact i'm pretty sure. Looks like minature blinkers, like you see on carriage horses.
I don't feel confident enough to remove them on a turbo charged imp lol specially with nobody here to help me hold him.

I placed the moss box back, but i'm not happy with the set up..can't get above 30.2c and that isn't high enough.
I had him out, and he did settle..vanished down my neck and curled up with an occassional peep from my sleeve.

I'm guessing that the main cause is he isn't warm enough then. A few degrees makes all the difference with these chilly blooded ones. The blindness could be another cause. The best thing to do is hold him just behind his head, let his body wrap round your arm that should keep him still enough to get a cotton bud and warm water onto the eyes, see if they don't come off that way, you can also gently use your finger to wipe across but very gently. You still have nothing to worry about, 20 minutes in a pillowcase could be enough to shift all the stuck shed, they can go ages without food so put that as a secondary niggle for now.

*runs to get spot to show you how to restrain them, he is agreeable to getting this done.
