Hmm I think maybe its not the best snake for us..not after seeing this website.

Hubby works offshore in the gas industry, Katana has juvenile arthritis and I have MS.
Steve doesn't get sick pay, if he can't check in he doesn't get paid, plus a likely warning.

Look at this and share your opinion please :)

ouch, have seen this before.

In my view he should have gone to a doctors!!

It looks to me like an allergic reaction - and it could have resulted in anaphylaxis, but obviously he was strong enough/not allergic enough to get it that bad.

But whether he felt ok or not, a doctors view would have been very informative - which is what he wanted to do by documenting it all etc. A doctor would confirm if it was an allergy or not and put the reaction into perspective - ie wouldn't happen like that to everyone.

The unfortunate thing is with a hoggy bite as opposed to something more common like a bee/wasp sting etc...it doesn't happen regularly for people to know they're allergic!

Your reasons are sound though to be having second thoughts, if something happened it could be more disastrous - ie hubby can't work or your MS means your body has a bad reaction to the venom etc.

But then don't you really have to let them chew down on you for them to deliver the venom as they are rear fanged.

To be fair the venom puts me off - i'd be worried i'd be the unlucky one who was allergic and didn't find out til i was bitten!

I am having second thoughts..after I bought a 2' viv that only a hoggie will fit in lol

I'm not allergic to bee stings, just cheap metal so I can't wear fashion jewellry. I know hoggies aren't known for biting, but the one in the shop will have a chew "greed" I was told.
Alot of folk have hoggies, so they can't be nasty snakes, can they?

Yes, a lot of snake venom contains anti-coagulant I believe.

That was nasty - but I've had exactly the same reaction to a cat bite (my darling Ali Kat, a feral who lived with me for some years and who got a bit autocratic at times.) In my case I took my fat hand off to a doctor for antibiotics.

It's said that a hoggie can't get a human hand or finger that far down its gullet for the rear fang venom to make any impression, but that article does seem to contradict this. Also, as Mystra says, there isn't much info about how often an allergic reaction can occur to a hoggie bite ...does sound like a not very good idea, under the circs - even if the little guy never bit, you'd still be worried, which you don't need.

As for your 2' viv - what about one of these?

http://www.bluelizardreptiles.co.uk/livestock/snakes/9632150002545

The males grow about 2' long, not sure about females but still a small snake.

Pricier than your hoggie and I believe they have a long fastin period like royals, but what a stunning and unusual snake!

Oh Rats! I say lol

I phoned Andrew (The snake shop :) and he said if I havn't got Ra eating..to "bring him in when I collect the hoggie" and that he'll get him back eating. So I can't back out now even if I had thought otherwise lol
Even BlueLizard said that the hoggie is the better snake for what I want, so that's that then *grins*

I have thought of a name for the little sod lmao

I wish to chirp in (not like me at all). Venom is a strong word for what Hoggies have. Its strong saliva lol. If I remember rightly as well the 'fangs' are not hollow like they are in front fanged snakes they are grooved delivering the mildly venomous saliva into the wound and its only repeated chomping that gets the saliva flowing. As to that wound, the initial bloodiness is (as BTAS says) the anti-coagulant, which actually helps as the body bleeds back out most of the venom. Its not a neat, clean, pure substance though as with all saliva its full of all sorts of stuff, and it can be these, rather the mild venom that can cause an allergic reaction in certain people, which can actually happen when any snake bites. As for the 'venom', think slightly sore and a bit swollen but nothing to prevent you from working.

The fanges are in the back of the mouth where the 'mild venom' comes from

But unless they think it's food
Most of the time they will just hiss / head butt
Or very rarely condition (scared for there life's) play dead

Taken from arbreptiles

Notes on Hognose Venom

Western hognose are what is called "rear fanged" and they do possess a type of venom, really just a mildly toxic saliva. This toxic secretion is normally harmless to humans, however a few isolated instances of allergic reaction have been recorded. No lasting effects have been ovserved in any case.
It's actually quite difficult to experience a hognose envenomation. Due to the location of the fangs in the far rear of the mouth, coupled with their small size, it's hard to come in contact with them. For this reason, and the fact that the venom is very mild and normally has no effect at all on humans, hognose are not considered dangerous in any fashion.
Keep in mind though that on very rare occasions, some people have displayed allergic reactions to these secretions.
