Hi all,

Let me start by saying I'm getting nothing for at least a year as we're doing a big extension to our house and there will be builders all over the place and we'll be moving around a lot.

However once we have the extension done there will be a large room where we will be keeping many of our animals that don't have free roam of the house.

Now I'm quite keen on another snake and I'm not sure if I'm after a boa or a carpet or what? I want something a little bigger than a Royal as both my dad and I are into snakes and I prefer the bigger more regal snakes to the smaller zippy ones.

What are boas like? Are there different sizes / tempraments apart from Dward and Normal? (I'm not referring to morphs here, more species) I'm after something that has the placid nature of a royal whereby I can bring it out for handling whenever I want and I can rely on her to come close to me without being worried about getting tagged on the face?

I've also seen some carpets that looked great, what are they like temperament wise?

It would be great if someone could post some pics of their boas or Carpets and let me see what they're like around members lol

Cheers

i have both a boa and jungle carpet

this is my female sonoran dwarf boa. she will get between 5-6ft and will get chunkyer than a royal. she is a yr old and about 3ft. she is a lovely snake to handle and has a great temperament, the breeder handled them a lot. she has never once gone to bite

female jungle carpet. she will get between 6-7ft but not as chunky as a royal. she is 3yr old and just over 5ft. she doesn't like being handled, hence the gloves. i don't think she was handled much as a hatchling and has been a defensive snake since i bought her. if you can get one that has been handled from day one you shouldn't have a problem

both the boa and jcp are great eaters, the jcp even eats while in shed

Thanks they both look gorgeous! I would always get a snake as a hatchling personally and would handle on a regular basis. That's what I did with my royal and now I can stroke her under her chin, on her nose, I can leave her in my pocket etc and she's fine with it all.

Are there any others I haven't mentioned that others can recommend?

I have an Irian Jaya Carpet - no decent pics of her, but she's a smaller carpet - she'll only reach 4/5' and although I was warned she was feisty, she's been absolutely great. She's nipped me once (she was in shed and I didn't realise) but that was after some hissing and headbutting to warn me off (I was picking her up to put her in her new viv.) The nip was nothing, and otherwise she's been a very gentle girl, and never missed a meal. Their care is no different to royals, except they do like to climb - she will perch just like a gtp, which she very much resembles, and in fact, despite the differences in husbandry, carpets and gtps are closely related and can be interbred (carpondros).

Here's Fea, never struck a real soppy snake :)
He tangles in my hair, probes ears and nostrils..man handles 3d glasses off my face and steals the phone lol

He's a Common Mexican Boa aka Sonoran (I think) like Black's :)
My Beauty snake is likely to reach 9' but although mine is docile, they can be quick.

Thanks for the replies! BATS, from your reply and black skulls I see that it seems that carpets are generally a little more feisty than boas... not that I mind personally but one of the reasons my mum loves my royal is that she's so very relaxed and docile.

Fea sounds just like my royal, I mean right now, it's the middle of the day, she ate 12 hours ago but she's already stuck her neck out of her hide because she just can't stand not knowing what I'm up to lol.

@Blackskull, I was hoping someone else would bring it up as I didn't want to be the one haha... what are they like generally? I've seen videos of them behaving quite well but how very huge actually are they (I've seen various sizes) and how big an enclosure?

On second thoughts,I wouldn't be able to satisfactorily house a burmese, while we have the space it would be difficult as on occasion my dad would be away and while he's happy to help with my snakes (having dealt with all manner of snakes during a career with WWF in India and going out to collect anti venom / rescue snakes in villages with Romulus Whitaker) I don't want to tie him into being a necessary factor in the upkeep of any of my snakes... I'm the one with all the duties / responsibilities.

i have never kept a burmese (the better half wont let me until we have a rep room that i can lock, so the cats can't get in) and only done a small amount of reading on them. from what i understand they are docile snakes (if the work is put in) with a fairly rapid growth up to about 10ft, not sure on average adult size maybe around 14ft but can get bigger. i think the min viv size from what i have read is 8x4x4 but with a snake that size personally i would go bigger still

I picked up an imperator baby in February and have learned one thing very quickly. Leave them well alone when they're in blue. The first time she was blue she just hissed a lot. The second time also, but 2 days after she shed she hissed and bit me. She's only small so it didn't hurt, but it's the first time I've been tagged by a snake. She's now back to normal and was fascinated as I cleaned out her viv whilst holding her in one hand.
With plenty of handling you shouldn't have problems.
