How long should I give my new addition to settle in before offering food and handeling regularly?
How often can I handle without stressing the guy? I used to hold my corn for 20 mins at a time once a day or every other day (also 48hrs after feeding) |

| i think it goes snake by snake some snakes take a while to settle in on the other hand corey wanted outof his viv the second day i had him but id leave the feed for about 7 days like kelfezond said. i think the rule is to leave them for about 2 weeks before handling thats what i have read. but if your royal is coming out of his hide to see you then hold it. corey knows when im coming home and he will sit ontop of his hide waiting for me then as soon as he sees me he will be at the glass lol like a excited puppy lol |

This exactly. Its best to deal with the snake as if its the shyest most nervous snake in the world, it might not be but if it is you aren't going to know right now as you haven't got to know it yet. 3 or 4 weeks without handling out of a 20+ years lifespan is a small sacrifice to make sure they are settled and content before starting to teach them the way of human interaction. |

Same here. I have never had the feeding problems that seem so common. Even my new babies were handled and then ate like champs the first day home. Totally individual snake dependent. |

I'm currently fighting the urge to handle 2 new additions LOL!
Rule of thumb is to leave them a few days (at least, ideally 7) to settle before offering food. Then try handling a couple of days after they have fed with you for the 1st time. Handle for short periods and see how they go.
All Snakes are different, some like to be handled for longer times than others!
Usually you get an idea from the snake themselves, their personality shows.
I've had some snakes feed the day after I got them home and wanted out of their viv/RUB straight away. While others wouldn't feed and never want to come out to play!

I left a fuzzy in there overnight (brained) which he didn't eat. Today, I assist fed him with little effort.
I'm in love with this guy. Can't wait til he takes his own prey. |

| 1 week, 1st time feeding. It was fed 2 days before i got him. I knew it was being assist fed before I got it. It's something I believe(d) I could do and now ultimately, have done. |

| Any shop/breeder ideally should not have let a snake that is not feeding under it's own steam be sold. As it goes though I would avoid assist feeding for a few weeks to a month, give it chance to settle into the new environment, get used to you in a non food forced into its mouth way and just give it time to see if with the right environment it will eat all on its own. A few weeks without food will do no harm at all. |

| He's been settling in well in all honesty and the assist feeding didn't take much persuasion. I will however, lay off the feeding for a couple of weeks to let him settle in more. |

| That's pretty disgraceful selling an assist feeder, assist feeding should be something personal to the keeper and that animal a bit of a shame his original owner didn't keep it up until the snake was ready to switch. |

| Yes it does sound a shame when you say it like that. The point is they were advertised as assist feeders. I'm an experienced keeper of herps and I'm ready for the challange. I am his new keeper and will be for a long long time so it will be something personal between us. He had 12 hatchlings for sale I'm sure he wasn't that attached unfortunately. I'm sure the nake is better off with me now. |

| Can I be rude and ask how much you paid? I personally dont believe any animal price is a rip off as they are loved and part of the family etc but would be interesting to know if the breeder/shop in question is just a slippery eel. |

| I suppose that is a fair enough price for a normal, its a shame it is a non feeder at the moment but fingers crossed for you it will soon get the hang of it. It may be an idea to try Multimammates as a feeder item, they are similar to rats, mice etc but are closer to the prey of choice for wild Royals, you can also try mice, it wont hurt, a feeding snake is always better than a not feeding one. |
