I'm looking at changing my current set-up (heatmat and 60w basking lamp) to a ceramic heater as my cold end temps seem to be too low (32ish in the hot end, 22 is in the cold end). So, a couple of questions.
What size ceramic would I need to heat a viv which is approx 4 x 18in x 2ft?
I currently have a standard on/off stat, would I be better off with a pulse or dimmer stat? |

I reckon a 200w ceramic with either style stat, 250w would also be fine as the stat will control the temperature :) A dimmer stat is advised if you ever want to switch to an IR Bulb. |

I've just set up a similar size viv and and using an 500watt AHS heater and that is keeping my temperatures fine and not running at full pelt so if it gets really cold in the winter I should have plenty in reserve. I'm sure others will come up with other alternatives but I'm happy at present. |

I agree with Dixon, the AHS is a great heater, I have one in my 55" setup, but they are costly to buy. If finances allow then the AHS500 is the best you can get:) |

as jainew says a 200w would do it, ive got a 3x18x 2ft high viv an the 150w ceramic doesnt get the floor/hot spot up to the right temp without the guard getting red hot so need to get a 200w for that viv.
and as said a pulse or dimmer stat will work fine for ceramic bulbs
not used an AHS yet but heard very good reviews on them but i do have a reptile radiator that works very well but does need spacers to keep it away from the viv roof as it kicks out a lot of heat through the top |
