So adie picks up her hedgehog today and we bought a box of mealworm for the little girl to have a munch on as a treat whenever she gets handled. I discovered I'm quite partial to the little wriggly things! They're kind of cute in a weird way, think I might have a bash at breeding this box so we don't have to go buy another and it sounds like it could be a fun project!

Anyone else breed mealworm? Any reasons I should/shouldn't ?

You rang!

They are the second easiest thing in the world to breed, Kerry Katona been at number one. lol.

Just feed them few bits of carrot peel every few days and I make the substrate up from wheat bran (tesco, £1.99 by the muesli) and bug grub. So the worms will turn into aliens/pupa so take them out or the worms will nibble at them, the aliens turn into beetles again take the beetles out as they might nibble at the aliens. The beetles will lay eggs into the substrate so every 2 weeks take the beetles out as they will eat the eggs too, put them in another tub and put the old tub/substrate somewhere to hatch (I write the date on the tub that I've taken the beetles out and its not long until you will see the baby worms, they are tiny so you'll not see them until they get a tiny bit bigger. Thats it job done.

You can do it on a larger scale in buckets but I get a few hundred meal worms out of each tub, I feed them to the birds to keep numbers down.
