I don't know if any of the Dark side people have been following the thread on the Garter snake from Wombwell, but I've been to pick the little fella up this afternoon and he's tiny!!!!
Basically, this lad in my village had a garter that wouldn't eat and he was scared it had parasites and couldn't afford to take it to the vets. I've took it in for a few weeks to try and sort it out for him.
He doesn't seem to have any signs of illness at the moment, but I'm waiting to have a good look at his poo before I taking him to the vets. Hopefully he's just a non-eater so I can deal with that a lot better.
I was told he was tiny, so expected that I might have to start him on earthworms to get him going onto pinkies, but he's too small for them! Only thing I can think of now is to try mouse tails on there own. Has anyone else got any ideas? |

They do, but he's too small for fish and fish can carry parasites.
Thought about trying a hognose trick and dipping the tail in cod liver oil |

Here he is- and yes he is smaller than a milk bottle lid.
I couldn't find a hide small enough so I had to make one out of a lid for a Hot Chocolate container. |

I don't think they eat chicken - basically same diet as a Hognose really - in the wild it would be mostly amphibians, then fish and then rodents. I think using some of the tricks I've used on Wilbur might work, just on a smaller scale.
Thanks for all the good luck everyone |

He...is...cute!
If you avoid the saddle of an earthworm (cue jokes) you can normally lop bits off from the tail end and the worm will survive for a surprisingly long time. If the worms in your garden are too big what about trying that wormery website that was posted on the amphibian site. Do the rep store that you go to stock the really tiny mealworms? They are only about 5mm long so he should be able to manage them and if you coat them in nutribol before he has them it should give him a bit of a boost.
Good luck and if you need any advice on the bug front just email or ping me. The laptop is normally on.
See, us southerners can have our uses |

Southerners do have uses- annoying northerners
I put a small worm in with him last night and it has gone this morning. So he either ate it, or it escaped. I'm hoping he ate it, because his viv is in our bedroom to keep him quarantined from our others, so I don't want to wake up tonight with a worm crawling across my face. |

lol. You're just jealous because we have mastered fire and the wheel. You'll catch up eventually
Just thought of some other possible food for the shoe lace (what you normally have in a shoe rather than brown string again). Do you know anyone that has land snails? Newly hatched ones are pretty tiny and the shells are quite soft. Either that or the baby slugs that should be out and about in the garden around now .
Edit: If you want any of the snail eggs my daughter's GALSs are going at it pretty much constantly at the moment so I should have some pretty soon. Could always post you some. |

I know Matty, surely Paulusworm can see that Northerners win hands down. Don't even know why he's trying.
Anyway- I gave the shoe lace another worm and he definitely ate it this time. There was a bulge and everything. So that means he's potentially eaten 2 earthworms, but even if the other one is loitering by my pillow, then he's still had something already.
I'm a bit disappointed really, I was expecting a challenge Obviously after keeping a anorexic Hognose and diet orientated Royal you can master anything.
Just hope he keeps it up really. |
