Well over the last few months I have been bulking up on rats and mice of various sizes,

I called my gf from work this morning asking ifshe could get the rats out from the freezer for tonights feeding, 20min l8r I recieve a text saying all the rats and mouse are out and defrosted.

I got home to be told that while getting food out the freezer last night she had moved them and forgot to put them back in.

Hmmm slightly annoyed but thought at least it was less then 24 hrs I had some food for tonight.

As it stands 0/4 decided they wanted to feed tonight

so a trip to the pet store to stock back up and I think I'll use a couple of boxes to store them so I don't lose all the food

I'd just stick them back in the freezer, it wont do any harm.

If that was me I'd bin them
But that's only my opinion

No point risking your royals over the sake of trying to save food
There worth more than that

You could have refrozen them, they would have been just fine, they're not chicken thighs.

I think you did the right thing, binning them and buying new. I wouldn't refreeze fruit, let alone meat, so wouldn't re-freeze rodents for snake consumption, they could have grown all kinds of ickyness on them that might give your snakes an upset tummy.

Sorry about all the wasted food - I did exactly the same with fruit the other day; took it out to get the children an ice lolly, and found it later on, all mushed up, next to the freezer. We managed to eat it between us over the next few hours, but I wouldn't have refrozen it.

I definitely would yes... unless it was chicken...

EDIT: I seem to remember reading a post somewhere on this here forum no less, about a snake that seemed to give preference to twice-defrosted rats; apparently it would not show any interest in them on the first attempt, but would take them on a second thaw quite readily.... allegedly...

I personally wouldn't especially when it defrosted in the shed on a daily hot day

If anyone intrested i found this http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Focus_On_Freezing/index.asp

I'll be honest i thought you couldn't refreeze any meat but after research you can althou i probably won't still

Yeah there is no difference really to the safety of meat refrozen, its the shelf life while out of the freezer that counts, for instance if you have a piece of chicken sitting out for 12 hours it will develop X amount of microbes, freezing halts them reproducing, so in effect its frozen at 8 hours until you then defrost and the timer starts again. With meat for human consumption there is very little risk provided that food is cooked properly in the shelf life window between fresh and where the actual meat begins to decompose (this can be mainly due to the microbes).

I dont refreeze often though, the only snake that doesn't eat is my Royal from time to time and after nearly 24 hours in the hot viv the rat stinks, decomposition has begun, gases are collecting etc so if I was to represent that at the next feeding and Duke took most of the day to eat it then it would have been out pretty much two days and be very stinky and liable to burst from the gas build up etc. Any other snakes are strike feeders and if they refuse I can nearly always find someone else to eat it, if not back in the freezer it goes as the out of the freezer time is minimal.
