Hello guys, just posting about something that is worrying me. As you may or may not have seen from recent posts, me and my girlfriend are looking to get our own place. Going to start off renting, what's bothering me is almost every house/flat says no pets. I'm assuming by no pets it's referring to animals that could potentially damage the property, like cats and dogs, I'm just after a bit of advice as to whether I should tell them I have snakes, and a few potential points to argue if they object. I hope our baby's don't become an obstacle, because they're with me for life :). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers folks. |

when i was looking for somewhere when i moved out from my mums i made all the right noises, nice size rooms, this could go there, that could go there nice area ect ect then at the end of the viewing i was up front and said i had a snake. i explained that he wasn't dangerous and couldn't escape but it didn't make a difference they didn't want to know. the only place that said yes was a pokey flat which i turned down. in the end i just didn't tell them and got offered the next house after the flat. i was lucky though and never had inspections and if there was any issues with the house, only a couple of minor ones, i would sort them myself if i could. my land lady only found out i had a snake when a letting agent came round after i gave notice but by then it was too late. all she said when she came round to check the house and return my deposit was is the snake still here before she came in.
i would be up front with the fact though especially if you know you will be getting inspections |

you do have rights as a tenant though and they are not allowed to just turn up and say we want to inspect the property, they have to give you notice, im not sure how much though. my plan if i was ever inspected was to cover the viv with a nice cloth and put a lamp, photos, whatever i could find turn the light off and make it look like a unit |

Thanks blackskull, all taken on board. It's such a great shame that they don't see these wonderful animals how we do. Sadly most people most people are put off just by the word snake. Don't Think there's any reasoning. Think it's best I be honest or I'd be forever worrying. |

Once you rent, a landlord has no right of entry. This was stated a few weeks back in another post. For a landlord to enter without your consent is an offence.

I remember when I was renting the estate agent would do a 3monthly inspection. Just to check that everything was ok. It was always prebooked so we used to cover the viv over with a cloth and put some things on top of it
You could also try the old "it's my brother/sisters/best friends snake I'm looking after while they're on holiday, it's no problem, is it?" trick. If they say no, I'd take that as they don't mind a snake in the house.
I'm not saying be deceitful, just creative |

The covering up thing sounds good. But I want more snakes when I get my own place lol. Since I was really young I've always wanted a room purely dedicated to reptiles. It has been my dream. |
