What would be the easiest way to make my snakes eat rats? One of them is adult male who was on rats for about 12 months. After 6 months winter break the only food he wants to eat are mice. If I don't offer him a mouse, he won't eat. When I offer him a rat he don't want to even smell it. Another one is my 130g female - exactly the same think. She won't miss one feed once mice offered. When I try with rat I always have to offer it to my other female. I was trying to keep those rat with mice just to give them some smell but it never worked. Braining don't work either. What else could I try? |

I tried two different ways. First one, I defrost them and when they are ready I warm them up with hair dryer. The second one,I put them in plastic bag and defrost them in warm water. None of these methods work. But when I offer them mice they may be prepared any way and they will be gone within seconds. |

Id let them defrost over time, rather then in warm water. Keep trying with rats each week and only rats, blast the rats nose/face with the hair dryer.
Also try scenting the rat with the mice.Try leaving the snake in a feeding tub with the rat for 10/15 mins. Also how big are these rats your trying to feed? |

I was trying all different sizes of rats - from tiny to small adult. I'm ready to keep trying with rats but will that be ok for small 150g female? |

I let mine defrost in plastic bag with my corns mouse and when they are ready i heat them up in the bag submerged in hot tap water for 10 mins then dab dry in kitchen roll then heat head with a hairdryer blowing the scent into his viv to get him interested and he strikes as soon as i wiggle it in front of him. When i first bought him he wouldn't even sniff a rat and wouldn't even strike a mouse i had to leave it in with him over night but when i tried this way he struck 1st time |

He might be harder to convert over,As he's been on mice all this time.So the faster you convert the female the better. She should take a rat in time without to much messing around.
With the 1000g male don't offer mice for awhile, then when you do offer food try a same size rat, thats close in size to his mice.Try scenting it,and super heating it's head. You could also try covering the rat in mice blood |

The thing is - he was on rats for about 12 months and after 6 or 7 months break with eating I was offering him rats and mice. Only mice were good to him so I gave him a few and then tried back with rats. But every time I was giving him rat instead of mouse he was not striking. |

Oh right,So he stopped feeding full stop? and to get him feeding again you tried mice? If he's taken rats before he should do again.Just offer him rats only and stick with it. |

Everyone else has covered my tips: Super heating, scenting etc.
Just don't give up trying!
With your little female I would recommend trying a rat pup heated up super hot and brained, it may be gross but that method has worked for me with 3 little ones who were mouse only or non feeders!
Good Luck! |
