Posted - 20/03/2014 : 23:25:02 Hey everyone thinking of picking up a little royal from my local pet store
Just wondering if I should get a rub or a monksfield terrarium to house him I think he's 2/3 months old at present
I know about substrate hides temps and humidity but being from the uk (Northern Ireland) it's pretty wet here a lot so would that benefit the humidity in any way ?
Any beginner advice would be much appreciated |

Posted - 22/03/2014 : 20:01:05 Not all pets at home are bad :P local one near me isn't to bad.wouldn't buy an animal from there or any gear now.but sometimes pickup food/live food etc.
If you can't get anywhere else,don't want a morph etc.then £60 isn't to bad :) |

Posted - 22/03/2014 : 18:46:21 I'll check the snake over at pets at home n if I think anything looks suspicious I'll leave it but for 60 it's not bad was in the other day just looking and asked to see his feeding schedule and he seemed to be feeding fine |

Posted - 22/03/2014 : 16:31:45 I was thinking the same as boomslang. I am just back from pets at home Lisburn and they had a juvenile royal in a wrong setup and a mouse thrown into the corner. It didn't look right. If you can make the trip to Moira (not THAT far) there's a place called Emerald Isle Reptiles. They have loads of royal pythons ready to go (cheaper too). I was there during the week and they have a good selection. It's run from a guy's house and he looks after them well. You might get a better snake there - just a suggestion.
Perhaps Pets at Home have a good after-care policy. That said, you may well pick up a cracker. |

Posted - 22/03/2014 : 09:06:05 Yeah it's a normal there looking £60 ... I live in Bangor mate my previous reptiles have all been from city reptiles in the city centre but because pets at home is close was just a convenience lol |

Posted - 22/03/2014 : 08:15:10 Where abouts do you live? There are quite a few places that are cheaper than pets at home and are proper reptile dealers. |

Posted - 21/03/2014 : 17:53:13 I don't actually monitor the humidity in my vivs. I just usually either spray the vivs or bung in a small bowl of hot water with a guard on it, where they cant tip it over, when it's shed time. |

that's cuz the ceramic will suck the moisture out of the air,it heats the air etc, rather then a mat.which only heats the small area above it.
The humidity will always be around 40% to 60% in the uk,depending on afew things.it shouldn't fall below that amount or get to high. In your wooden viv with a ceramic, you aren't going to find the vivs humidity being 90% everyday.even if it rains non stop outside :P And a rub with a heatmat will hold higher humidity.
Alot of people just spray the vivs or add moss or whatever.Around shedding time to up the humidity. |

Posted - 21/03/2014 : 09:30:45 It doesn't come with a probe. I just set it in the back corner and it seems to be fine there. There are ones with probes for not much more. A quick amazon search will get what you need.
I heard the same about the humidity but I also hear that too high a humidity level can cause respiratory infection, so I figure, what's the harm in checking the levels constantly, whether in shed or not, so that I can keep an eye on it - especially since it rains here 364 days in the year. |

Posted - 21/03/2014 : 09:24:23 Does it come with a probe tho for the temperature reading? I have two with probes just need to get a hygrometer now but I've heard people say not to worry about humidity until it's time to shed |

Posted - 21/03/2014 : 09:06:08 Hey Spierzo. I can't offer any advice (I only joined yesterday too and only have first snake), but I was thinking the exact same thing as you re: the humidity. I also live in NI so I was thinking that the humidity would be a problem. Let me tell you what I found out...
I bought a viv and put the faunarium in it for now. Because I was putting the faun into the viv I got a heat mat to put under the faun. However, I tested the humidity when using a heat mat and the percentage relative humidity was quite high (> 70% RH). However, when dishing the mat and using the ceramic heater in the viv the humidity has been a constant 55% RH for the last few days. Not sure if there are other factors involved there, but that's what happened to me.
I got myself one of these....
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Temperature-Humidity-Meter-Thermometer/dp/B004GN9EH2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395392618&sr=8-1&keywords=hygrometer
It looks basic and it is, but the readings are surprisingly accurate (I've tested it against high spec temp/humidity dataloggers and the values are very close).

Posted - 21/03/2014 : 02:44:16 i'd get a rub, then a viv :) As with the monksfield terrarium,it's a larger cost for starters over a rub.Plus, you'll be replacing it with something larger in no time. The money saved, you can put towards a normal viv.
Use a rub for the baby, then get a 3 foot viv etc if you so wish.I wouldn't worry about the humidity. |
