Thanks to Hodhie and hs sticky in the DIY section i made my first royal python viv today
Its for my 07 Obran who currently lives happily in a 50ltr RUB so im hoping he will appreciate the little bit of extra space and also being on a ceramic.

I have edging tape to put on and obviously glass runners/ glass and fit the ceramic but thought i would share a pic now and then hopefully by next w/end i will have a completed viv pic to show you

P.s it was done in this dark conti board so it matches the bedside draws (Ikea ones)

Do you just have it hooked up to a stat? what temps do you get from it please?

Ant.

Have it connected to a pulse stat, 90 on the hot side and 85 on the other

i have two in my bedroom and they dont bother me at all..heaven knows what my neighbours think though with a red glow coming from my bedroom..lol.

Indeed what do they think? Mine probably think the same with red light coming from my bedroom.though the snakes live down stairs..

yeah used dimming stat with probe set under the hot spot and set until 89/90F was stable. the other end balanced around 80/81F. Introducing more greener and creating more shade in the cool side will help a bit as well. I took temp readings inside the hides.

my first viv build was close to size. I used a 75watt infra red on a dimming stat and managed to get a good 10degree gradient. although I did have more air vents. one each side at top..

Thanks for following my guide, I use reptile radiators, they are a little pricey but get perfect heat gradient.

Ok thanks Remmy, much appreciated.

So a mat taped down inside the viv then on a stat? or are there any other options apart from making another viv, lol
Remmy Posted - 23/08/2009 : 21:27:58
ant, i made a 23*21*18 viv and had my 07 royal in it for 5 weeks. Its hard to get everything in the right place as the ceramic covers a large area and as matty said you cant get a thermal gradient.
antw23uk Posted - 23/08/2009 : 21:01:28
ok thanks Matt, will have a re think. It's easy enough with the beardie as she brumates through the winter but i am worried about the temps using just a heat mat when the room temps get so cold. I use a storage heater at certain times of the day when im asleep etc but come 2-3am in the mornings its way too cold for just the surface heat a heat mat creates!
matty18714 Posted - 23/08/2009 : 20:53:01
You can get small 60watt ceramics, but I still dont reckon you will get a good enough gradient.

No can do, they are being kept in the bedroom and i wouldnt be able to sleep with a red 'glow' next to the bed, lol

Grr this is so frustrating ... i hadnt thought about it being too small for a ceramic!

Really? Oh ok will do a bit more research

The whole idea of them going into wooden vivs is because the room they are in gets too cold in the winter to be 'safe' for a heat mat! Hence putting them on ceramics!

Advise very much appreciated

I wouldnt use bulb heating in a viv smaller than 3'. I dont think you will get much of a thermal gradient.
antw23uk Posted - 23/08/2009 : 19:08:45
It's 24x15x15
Remmy Posted - 23/08/2009 : 19:06:07
Looking good cant wait to see it finished. Reckon a 100w will be ok
matty18714 Posted - 23/08/2009 : 18:47:34
How big is it?
antw23uk Posted - 23/08/2009 : 18:43:45
Any help on the wattage of ceramic for this viv will be much appreciated. I cant seem to email Hodgie!
