Posted - 07/11/2009 : 17:35:04 Has anyone ever brought any frozen food off of 888 reptiles at all? I am asking because they sell the rat fluffs that I need for Boo, but because I have no working mobile, and the home phone has been cut off, and I can't get hold of them by email I am unable to ask them about the weight.
I need to know what the weight of their rat fluffs is approximately because with delivery its gonna cost about £10 more than the rats i get from the pet shop, so I dont want really to have underweight food arriving.
If anyone could help me out here I would be very very grateful, as Boo only has 1 rat pup left, so I need the food A.S.A.P
thanks |

Posted - 12/11/2009 : 15:20:59 Sounds like a good plan. I'm sure once he works his way through that batch he'll be able to manage the small wieners. Yes would say you are right in thinking 888 should know what they're sizing, certainly should be better than a store. Having said that most stores should be ok for sizing pups, fuzzies and upto small wieners as that part of the life cycle is visually evident the rats are different i.e. pups no fur, fuzzies with fur and small wieners are exactly that wiened of rats, so broadly speaking, shops differ on their "version" of what a large wiener, small rat...... large rat is, therfore the larger discrepancies. The smaller the rat usually means the smaller the margin of error.
Hope makes sense! Good luck |

Posted - 12/11/2009 : 13:17:35 i am taking the advice of bengy_s now to see if this works. have ordered 20 rat fuzzies from 888reptiles (not sure how much they weigh but being a specialist reptile supplier, i trust they know what they are doing in comparison to my pet shop!!) then hopefully after these she should be able to have another bash at one of the small rat weaners.
thanks you |

Posted - 12/11/2009 : 11:14:13 well bad news im afraid. When the small rat weaner had defrosted, it was a lot bigger, Boo obviously sized it up and obviously belived that she wouldnt have managed it, i left it in there all night, and brained it just incase it was a simple matter of persuading her to eat. She is used to rats as she has been on rat pups so i have concluded that she believed it was too big for her. So i took it out this morning and tonight she is going to have the last rat pup that i have left, which although is only a small dinner will do, until i get some more food in. I have just ordered some rat fluffs from 888reptiles and i think i am going to leave her on these until she gets to 350-400g and then i am going to try again with the small rat weaners.
oh well these things happen, better luck next time thanks everyone for your advice. |

Posted - 11/11/2009 : 20:12:52 Just thought I'd chip in here, that's what I do. I go to my LRS and ask for the smalled small rat weaners they have, weighing to about as close to 25g as possible, and credit to them, even though it must be a hassle, they weight the rats for me and stuff, which is quite nice of them too.

Posted - 10/11/2009 : 06:42:59 I would leave it longer after the first one definitely, but then she should be ok every 5 days (up to around 400g for me). |

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 22:44:49 well looking at tsmreptiles, their small rats average out at about 100g, so when she gets onto 1000g, then she can start going onto these. Their weaners range from 40-50g, so i am guessing that when she hits 600-1000g she might need 2x weaners.
and also, if the weaners that she is going to be eating now for a while are about 20% of her body weight, shall I only be feeding her every 7 days rather than every 5 days, because I don't want a fat snake by feeding too often. |

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 19:52:26 Weaners vary in size up to 100g, so if you go on the 10-15% theory then up to 1000g, which I reckon could take 6 - 12 months from where you are now. |

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 18:50:22 By rights if the ones now are about the same width as her then you could go bigger now.

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 18:35:29 thanks a lot guys you saved me 80p the pet shop were doubting she would eat it, and suggested giving 3-4 rat pups in each feed until she gets bigger, but i dont think that is good for the snake personally, especially if she can go bigger. my mum was also sceptical about it, but i will let her watch Boo feed on wednesday and that should help her understand that snakes eat more than it seems (she tends to look at the size of her neck rather than the thickest part of her body).
also just a question: i know it will be very rough guide because of shedding and the fact that all snakes grow at different rates, but how long do you reckon she could be on then until she could go another size up, (large weaners/small rats etc.)
thanks so much for your help *sends virtual hugs* |

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 18:04:45 I'd say go for it. Also, she'll put on a fair bit of weight from it which will make the next one easier |

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 18:00:53 Agreed. Though 10-15% weight guide is a good rule of thumb, when they are small they put a lot of nutrients from the food into growth etc. So although the wiener is more like 20% current weight, as Dave said its not too wide for him and he can use the extra nutrients to grow. As they get bigger and growth slows you can concentrate on keeping between the 10-15% rule more. |

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 17:51:47 Yes that size is fine, you can even go bigger than that, the recommended is about 1.5 times the body width of the snake. While young they have a high metabolism rate so it will soon be digested and put to good use for growth.

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 15:18:37 ok right i went down the pet shop to see their small weaners, and they do obviously look big compared to the rat pups that she has been eating. I asked if they could weigh them, they say they dont weigh them, i asked if i could weigh them, they said would rather not because they dont want to have their food tampered with (idiots!)
so i took a chance and brought one.
plus - the weaner is about the same size as the thickest part of Boo's body
minus - she only weighs 192g, the rat weaner is 36g
how important is this and do you think she will be ok with 1 every 7 days. your the experts, advice please, here are some pictures for extra help.
the back of the rat with the thickest part of Boo
Boo with rat (she wasnt impressed cause it was frozen )
and again
if you could let me know soon as that would be great, she is due a feed Wednesday
thanks |
