Posted - 10/03/2011 : 10:09:22 Hello!
Diablo, as many of you know, has this habit of climbing up things, anything he can find, he climbs up his hides, up the light guard, up the walls, up the glass, climbs on the lock alot.
The only downside to this is he sucks at climbing, every 10 minutes you hear him fall off something and hear a BANG! where he's hit the deck again. He does this, I would guess well over 100 times a day. If I open the glass he'll immediately come rushing out and climb up my hand.
I'm worried he's going to start doing damage to himself falling off everything all the time, I know snakes are sturdy but christ he must fall over at least 500 times a week.
Also he has now started climbing up his lock and pushing his nose in the gap between the two pieces of glass, he can't fit inside it but I'm worried he'll hurt his nose if he keeps it up. I suspected it was him trying to get more ventilation as I'm sure some air gets in there but I tested the theory by leaving the glass open an inch or so to see if he'd move his nose rubbing to the gap but he kepts it up at the lock, all the while climbing and falling off at the same time.
Anything I can do to stop him doing this? Is he just trying to escape his viv or is he just a hyper snake? |

Posted - 16/03/2011 : 22:12:08 The cave is pretty cool!
I'll buy some more hides tomorrow when I get their rats, only thing I really dislike is that plastic foliage stuff I'll try to find an alternative I just dislike how it feels xD Im sure the snakes don't mind but meh, they don't have to touch it I do lol |

Posted - 16/03/2011 : 21:38:36 No worries - have this one for now... not sure how much it helps, sorry.

I'll try to put the cave up at the weekend but, since it's currently occupied, you might have to be patient!
I'm sure you've seen these yourself but, just in case:
Reptile hide is this one: http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/exo-terra-reptile-cave.html
Snake cave is this one: http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/exo-terra-snake-cave.html
In our viv, the cave is on the right, hide on the left with a branch inbetween. And it's a 18 x 15 x 15 viv. I was surprised by the recommendation of such a small viv but I just followed the breeder's suggestion (after asking lots of questions) and he was dead right!
Cheers
Steve

Posted - 16/03/2011 : 14:47:18 Hi Kelfezond
Not that you need to be taking advice from a newbie like me, but if my experience of 2 weeks helps any, then great!
Like you, I wanted a more rugged look to my son's viv and didn't fancy too many toilet roll tubes and old cereal packets... this was a birthday present after all, so in his very small viv, I managed to squeeze in an Exo-Terra reptile hide and a snake cave (both medium) as well as a branch and lots of fake leaves.
Here's the thing: in the first week, we don't think Kate the snake knew about her snake cave in the cool end, and consequently spent the day time holed up in her reptile hide in the hot part or roaming around at nightfall, seemingly looking for a way out. If there had been things to fall off, she probably would have, and she did fall off the fake leaves a couple of times in the early days.
However, mid way through week 2, she found the cave and very rarely came out. She had her first feed on Saturday and we haven't seen her since - she's in the cave and seems to love it, I guess. We've lifted the lid just to make sure she's OK, but no roaming at dusk now.
The lid of the cave was a bit of a pain at first as she kept knocking it off (she frightened herself and us doing so once) but we fashioned a fix using velcro at the weekend (I can post piccies if you'd like to see what we did!) and now she's as snug as a bug.
Perhaps something like this might help Diablo?
Just a thought.

Posted - 16/03/2011 : 10:09:17 Thanks, I have been meaning to clutter it up a little more but I'm sick of using cardboard and other ugly things so we did set a date to visit the shop and buy some real stuff, should be going this week some time so will buy some vines and leaves and more cork hides |

Posted - 16/03/2011 : 03:50:16 Hi Kelzefond,
Just my very honest observation...
Your snake probably can't find a secure spot in his viv that's why he is always climbing. If I'm correct in my analysis, this could potentially be harmful for the snake.
I looked at your video and it seems like your viv is very large with big open see-through spaces in a sunny (active?) part of the house. This is too open for a royal.
From my experience, my snakes get really stressed out in wide open spaces. All my vivs are "cluttered up" so that there is always a "canopy" on traffic areas (from one hide to the other and from hide to waterbowl). I use plastic leaves and logs to achieve this. When I had my new baby snakes in their temporary "grow out" RUBs, I used crumpled newspaper to clutter up the viv.
Also, all my glass vivs have the sides covered with dark material (I have cork bark on a few, aquarium background on another). This minimizes the royal's perceptions of movement around the room where the vivs are in.
Anyway, here's an example of one of the cluttered glass vivs:

Posted - 10/03/2011 : 18:58:06 Now there is an idea, i can hardly climb the stairs let alone a glass wall after some gin! |

Posted - 10/03/2011 : 18:50:52 Get some of that pipe lagging and make him a special helmet and pads and stop putting gin in his water bowl.
MY corn is always climbing on his viv lock even though its at the top, once they get up you cant open the door either. Duke like to climb (when he isn't hiding) but is far too fat for using the lock. |

Posted - 10/03/2011 : 17:19:02 He doesn't just fall off the lock, he falls off the wood, his hides, the light guard.
He's just stupid o.o
I might invest in some more climbing toys for him though maybe some vines or more wood.
So mich for royals being ground snakes that spend alot of time hiding away lol |

Posted - 10/03/2011 : 17:08:42 I would probably do the same as Sandi mentioned. You've got piece of wood next to one of your hides. Just try to move it in the place where the snake falls all the time. Maybe it'll stop him. |

Posted - 10/03/2011 : 13:27:34 Hi Kelfezond, I was going to suggest you put the lock on the bottom of the door, that where i put mine but if its been launched then 2 late! Jungle vine might help or some extra wood branches perhaps? |
