This is my first snake :) Born august09, i got her friday (2days ago)
I fed her last night and she fed on the 2nd attempt perfectly (first attempt she striked for the food but soon released her grip)
It is far from tame at the moment, but i have read its best not to handle the snake much at all for the first few weeks atleast. I have only handled to move into the box for feeding.
Dont know its sex yet, it hasnt been probed, therefore i havent decided on a name either!
Any tips would be appreciated for first time snake keepers!

Posted - 29/01/2010 : 17:47:29 wow 4 weeks :)
did you feed him in the viv during that time? and yes moving their hides is so tempting, i did do it once i will admit, but that was because i set them up poorly initially.
I fed my royal on day 2, took him out of the viv, into a box and BAM he fed fine, however he is very very agressive right now, so i will live him a further 3 weeks minimum while only feeding him. |

Posted - 29/01/2010 : 17:29:29 Welcome, my first snake was a royal too! i have left him for nearly 4 weeks now without handling him as was having problems, feeding etc, then he shed, so last night was the first time i had him out, it is so tempting to keep looking at them and moving there hides, but i am so glad i took these guys advice on here, got him out no prob's last night. |

Very normal and it's not just the first few weeks either! My snake's got a nickname, 'stick in a box' |

Posted - 25/01/2010 : 18:30:44 i think infra red bulbs give heat and the minimal light so you get both then. But you then wouldnt need the heat mat for a heating source |

Posted - 25/01/2010 : 18:26:11 Something like an 8W energy saving bulb gives out negligible heat. |

Posted - 25/01/2010 : 17:47:40 i dont think any bulb can really give you light without heat...but someone might have a way to achieve this |

Posted - 25/01/2010 : 17:26:15 aw cute.. might be an idea to leave for a week now before feeding again just so that s/he can get totally used to the new surroundings, no handling no feeding zip, just water changes and substrate spot checking |

Posted - 25/01/2010 : 06:55:01 Also, if that's the thermometer you're using (the strip on the back), get a digital one, so much more accurate and very cheap.
Just search for 'Digital Aquarium Thermometer' on ebay, they're ~£3. |

Posted - 24/01/2010 : 22:18:47 but then it is very dark, is there any bulbs that create light without too much heat?

Posted - 24/01/2010 : 21:57:24 You wont get a temp gradient in a viv that small with a bulb, I would turn it off and just use the mat. |

Posted - 24/01/2010 : 21:50:20 I do have one more concern.
I am using a 40W bulb in my viv, and it seems to generate so much heat the heatmat is rarely needed, apart from at night. ( i have a stat which shows when the heatmat is on) I have temperature readers at both ends of my viv showing simlar readings during the day... This means i dont have much of a temp gradient because the light heats the whole viv to the same temperature. Do i need a different bulb? my viv is only 2foot x 15" x 15" |
