Not sure what has caused this in my beardie viv i don't know if its the slimline ceramic with it sitting closer to roof or if wiring burning has caused it, any ideas?

Before rubbing it

after rubbing was quite deep

the wiring

and the holder

I've just left the basking bulb in as it was that that was heating the viv

kk cool :) what you going to do now then? seeing as you've had to take that bulb out.

I replied with this

Thank you for reply i was just making you aware some shops are not making people aware that you need to use your holder and maybe packaging could state clearly to prevent this happening.

Thank you Carl

and got this so hope they do

Thanks Carl, it's a good point well made. I will be sure to speak to our suppliers and hope to make this point more clear. Many thanks. Chris.

The holder they sell atm,Is more or less the same.Unless you hang it inches from the roof.Add a guard etc,you don't save any space over a normal ceramic.Making these kinda pointless atm.

They still don't state its dangerous to use most mounts, and that you should only use their one.

I am afraid we have seen this once before and this is our reasoning for recommending our own holders,
Should state this on the website and boxes etc.

We will soon be launching a new reflector and guard unit
This is what they need,a holder built for these bulbs. So you get an advantage over normal ceramics.

Reply from them this morning

Hi Carl,
Many thanks for sharing these pictures. I am afraid we have seen this once before and this is our reasoning for recommending our own holders, which hang a bit lower in the terrarium and do not cause too much heat to rise so close to the roof of the terrarium. We will soon be launching a new reflector and guard unit which we then hope will encourage more people to use these bulbs in this new manner.
Many thanks for sending the photos.
Chris

how long have you had the slimline ceramic setup in the viv?
chrisc Posted - 20/10/2013 : 19:23:59
thank's
yea i dread to think of what could happen if someone is using it as a main heat source.
i don't post on RFUK anymore but can put a post of this up on captive bred
carlb1981 Posted - 20/10/2013 : 19:12:15
Yeah of course Chris fire away i was gonna post this on rfuk too as a warning would hate to think others are using them and risking fire especially since this happened to mine and it only ran first couple hours in morning at most id imagine someone using one as main heat source would be more at risk?
chrisc Posted - 20/10/2013 : 17:35:19
lucky you spotted this before it caught fire.

seem's kind of pointless getting a slimline bulb if you need a different bulb holder an would still need a standard bulb guard

is is ok to steal a couple of your pic's so i can make a warning post on my group's about this?

that's what i thought when looking for something to replace a normal one.but after a gap or putting it on a bracket, plus a gaurd etc i just thought fck it,and went with a rad.

Sounds good :) but they don't state anywhere which holders you must use :) there holder is rubbish to :P better of with a bracket,so you can space the holder afew inches down.without having to drill holes through the roof.

But they don't state anywhere, its bad to use normal type holders. It might seem obvious, but guess not they do say.."coming soon new holders etc etc"

So maybe their new stuff will be an easy to setup holder and work with this great.
carlb1981 Posted - 19/10/2013 : 22:16:53
Wish id kept the packaging to see if it does already state on it to be used with hook type holder, i know it doesn't state on ebay that's needed
carlb1981 Posted - 19/10/2013 : 22:15:15
I've sent this to them
Hi I've been using one of your slimline ceramic bulbs in my beardies viv for the past 6 months, i noticed today that the viv roof above the ceramic was burnt badly i was just using a normal ceramic bulb holder the type that screws to the roof directly and after looking at your website i noticed you recommend using your own holder which hangs from viv roof which would probably have prevented this. As i bought the bulb from an ebay seller this isn't stated in their advert so just making you aware that maybe people are using incorrect holders that may cause fire and maybe if you could state on the bulbs packaging so as it stands out as a warning to prevent this from happening.
Thank you Carl
boomslang Posted - 19/10/2013 : 22:06:40
I looked around for ya,States in afew places. To be used with a hook or holder, that gives you a gap.Or a dome wire cage thing etc etc.
Or else will cause "Burning of wood" heat build up etc etc.

they might email you back saying.it should have been obvious to you.that screwing it to the roof would cause that

I went with a rad over these,as after you mess around there's not much difference between it and a normal bulb :P
carlb1981 Posted - 19/10/2013 : 21:56:46
Will send them an email, I've just noticed on their site they state to be used with there holder which looks to be one that hangs from roof by the power cable
boomslang Posted - 19/10/2013 : 21:35:07
I have a gap,or a heat guard between the holder and roof.As always worried about stuff like this.Being a slim bulb and close to the roof,Its no surprise stuff like this happens. With the long ceramics the heat has more space to dissipate etc etc etc.

It might have been the holder,But it looks undamged. From the pics it looks like pure heat build up on the base of the holder.

So yeah id email them,or phone them :) see what they have to say.

Definitely worth emailing them then. Someone else could have the same problem and not realise, might burn their house down.
