The comments made by the public far outweighed the cat lovers in support of the snake.
It will be interesting to see the outcome of this - they reckon they got 3000 odd signatures - how's the antiwilbur petition coming on???

That's a really good e-mail karl, well written and rational...which unfortunately is why I don't think those people are really gonna take it to heart..
Just from their documented reactions, I don't think rationality is their strong suit. >.< |

Dear Sir/madam,
I understand your sudden requirement to rid the world of "deadly snakes", as a gut reaction to loosing your cat. However, please remember that the python was in its owners' back garden, not yours.
It is permissive of this society to allow cats to roam wherever they will, and I do not agree with this. When I lost an African Grey parrot to a prowling cat (which jumped from a bush to catch my parrot) I did not call for the removal of predatory cats from the UK population, I merely chose to bill the owner of the cat for the parrot.
If a cat strayed into my garden and my dogs attacked it, would it be my dogs fault? or the fault of the cats' owner for not supervising the cat correctly.
please don't tarnish the minds of people who already fear and unduly discriminate against reptiles, yours is a tragic case, but one that could have been avoided on both sides.

I'm a 46 year old mother of two, have a detached property in a repectable area, I was in university until recently studying to become a primary school teacher, but because I have snakes I'm a chav!!! Lmao.
The trouble with people is that they are niave and only see the sterotypical view on snakes like the Hollywood classics of snakes on a plane or steve erwin trying to catch a viper that spits venom in his face....these images to these people are what all snakes portray. |

Uch...reading about that story and those comments makes me lose faith in humanity...yet again.
I've had that reaction to my own snakes sometimes, but I always try to educate people. |

Ha ha ha . Chav???? I used to legally eat chavs for breakfast . From what I have read on the websites of these papers most of the comments have been made by people who's only experience of snakes has been watching Anaconda. A few of them would also probably fall into the pigeon hole labelled "mad cat lady" . On my last visit with Sherman to my son's preschool some of the staff were staring, with petrified expressions on their faces, at the holdall Sherman was being transported in. When he came out of his bag their expressions changed from ARRRRRGGGHHH! to Awwwwww. Once the tabloid media gets a hold of these stories they get blown up out of all proportion . I don't agree with the idea of large snakes and lizards being classified as DWA but I do think that some kind of licence needs to be introduced to prevent idiots from buying the bigguns. I'm sure Dave will agree with me that while they are big and do have the potential to do serious damage they are also amazing animals that never cease to surprise us with their intelligence and individual personalities. It would be a shame if media hype made it unaffordable for us to keep the pets we love so much due to too much government interferance.
p.s. When Sherman is being transported in his holdall he is bagged and placed within a large rub with heat pads along one side so he has a hot and a cold side. |
