Hi everyone, I have a quick question about the placement of thermostat sensors and thermometers. I am using a Habistat thermostat and a digital thermometer but I am unsure where to place them in the viv. Is it best to monitor the hot end or the cool end? I know I could buy another thermometer so there is one at each end but I only the one at the minute.

Thanks

Yeah it just snaps off just make sure the gun has got to full temp first. If your worried wrap a piece of cling film over the probe so it snaps away cleanly.

Thank again bob Going to get a heat gun from halfords tomoz
And congratulations bats :)

Now bed time :) for me

The heat mat is normally in 2 parts, pick one of the black sections, then put the stat probe in the middle of that bit.

Put your RUB on the mat, it won't sit flat because of the stat probe but it doesn't cause any issues other than not been flat. Stick your thermometer probe anywhere in the hot end but ideally in the middle of the bit covering the heat mat. ( I did a fair bit of experimenting with probe placement over a month as I was unsure of RUBs and found that the reading isn't all that different anywhere the heat mat is so just went for near where the hot end hide would be).

Speedy edit, congrats on the shed bats.

Amendment - comment on Bob charging round the house with glue gun -

Ooo I do hope you didn't come to a sticky end ...

Just checked my temps - and found that Cy has shed, AND eaten the mouse I'd left with her - I feed the corns when in shed but it's a red-letter day when that girl eats. Perfect shed too, with its one eyecap. Yaay!

Very good diagram bob

If it was you glue the thermometer to
Bottom of the rub

On the left ,centre of the heat mat
Or
Right "
Or middle "
Lotabob Posted - 07/05/2011 : 23:39:49
I have a diagram for just such a query.

I use my glue gun to stick everything down, the stat probe to the mat, the hot end thermometer probe, to the bottom of the RUB, the thermometer screens to the side of the RUB. I ran round the house like a crazy John Wayne glue gunning everything down.

I might just have to invest in a heat gun then
Have you used it in rubs then or just vivs
And what about if you want to remove it
Where would you recomend glueing the thermometer probe

Sorry for all the questions :)

I love my glue gun, I think I paid £3 on ebay for it. Had to check out the glue itself, the way it works is plastic and wax mixed together, then its heated, melts the plastic and evaporates the wax so when it sets it sets clear, only tip is wait until it gets really hot so it evaporates most of the wax for a stronger more durable finish.

At this time of night I shut down most of the brain, it has a sleep while the basics part stays awake then when its awake through the day the backup bit sleeps. Get way to live been an insomniac.

Sealant is good but hot glue is better, it sets in seconds and is just plastic so totally safe.

What brand is that then? Sounds good.

Our pleasure lol - know what you mean about worrying - I've been known to go round checking temps at 3 am.

Erm, where's my temp gun? Just off to prowl ...

Lol - thanks Bob - great minds think alike!

Also just occurred to me - aquarium sealant - brilliant stuff, only trouble is you have to keep it away from the snake for 48 hours due to fumes and the time it needs to cure - after that though, it's ace.

I use hot glue, tape is not great when it comes to snakes if they get caught on it they will struggle and rip scales off to get free, or you'll get the job of taking the tape off a very unhappy snake with oil. Heat will heat the substrate its just not as quick to do it as it is a the bottom, but you dont want the heat at the bottom been really hot while it heats the substrate.

(I should have seen it was as hot, I'm tired, the brain is running at about 20%)

HAHA BATS another overlap. Good idea with the cable tie though, nice one.
