Is it true that female royals have shorter tails than males?

I`ve just read the book "The Complete Ball Python" by Kevin McCurley and it says,
Males usually possess more pronounced cloacal spurs located on either side of the vent. A male may also have a longer tail. As each of these conditions can be quite viable, they dont provide a hard and fast rule for consistantly and properly sexing ball pythons.

from what i gather. females commonly have a slightly shorter tail from vent to tip. Males are also suppose to have a bit of a lump just behind the vent that females don't????

If probed correctly, not dangerous at all.

OK,

how dangerous is it to check the sex of a snake then?

i know they all vary...in sizes..just that P is really chunking out and he has a short tail...

compared to my other male...they are same age but nearly a 100g difference in weight...
