Hi guys, I went to my local rep store today to get some mice and got talking to the owner about my snake and set-up. I mentioned that i used aspen and he took a sharp intake of breath whilst shaking his head and went on for around 10mins on why i should never use Aspen.
Apparently its dusty, gets in their lungs, under their scales and is too dry. He did also say it got in their ears- correct me if i'm wrong they dont have any. Anyway he said he would never use it and strongly advised me never to use it? I thought the majority of snake owners use it and its ideal for royals. That's what i heard when i was researching substrates. He recommended orchid bark and said it was much more suitable. What are your opinions?
Cheers, Dave |

Have a look at some of the massive US breeders online. Snakebytes TV and that sort of thing, they all use it. |

It seems as though they're gone, haven't seen any for over 2 weeks, not going to put the substrate in yet though as i've just put the decor back and i want to keep an eye on it. |

I use orchid bark for sofia as it's more natural? & in my opinion looks better for my sake. |

My main hobby is growing orchids. My other hobby is putting up with the kids' and husbands' hobby which is pets - snakes included.
I have tons of orchid bark lying around but I don't use it for the pets - not for the hamsters, nor rats, nor bird, and not for the snakes. The bark is pretty tough and has jagged edges.
I use Aspen - the shredded kind (Kaytee brand) - because it is soft, absorbent, and inhibits odors.
I'll take this opportunity to post a picture of my favorite orchid - the waling-waling (vanda sanderiana).
