I have noticed today there are some posts on the dark side about Royals being rescued with burns and being kept at horrendously high temps...

Why does this keep happening, it makes me very angry and also very sad that these animals are suffering..

It is easy to blame pet shops, but i just dont understand it...

I new nothing about keeping snakes when i got Peanut, but i came online and just read and read and educated myself and of course was lucky to find the dark side which led me here...

I cant believe people can sit back and let an animal suffer like that..

How many snakes die even at the hands of people who think its ok?

It makes me so bloody angry...

sorry i am having a rant............

i know what your saying Matty, but ignorance is not an excuse for neglect...

Cat is a perfect example, she saw something wrong and came for help...now look at her, Ra is a wonderful example of a turn around...

I'm sorry i find it painful reading of these things...

The main culprits (in my opinion) are Pet Shops.

Buying from a Pet Shop you'd expect their advice to be good, however, most do not recommend thermostats or bulb guards etc. So why would anyone look for other advice when they have the 'expert' pet shop advice.

Big thumbs up to Emsworth Aquaria and Reptiles in Portsmouth then. Bog standard kit came with lamp guard and I was told that "I needed a 'stat so which did I want to buy". Paul, the guy that looks after the royals, was lurking in the background the whole time listening to the conversation and Lisa, the lady that was selling the kit and Sherman to me, waited for the nod from him before she made the sale. I get the distinct feeling that if Paul wasn't happy about anything that was said he would have refused the sale.

It's nice to know that there are some good stores out there but there are some bad ones out there giving some pretty dodgy advice. Unfortunately most new owners take what the shop says as gospel.

I originally went to Burley Dam in Great Sutton, bought what I was told was all the right stuff, went to pick Sofia up, had Dave @ Contact Pets in Chester go over what I'd bought & ended up taking most of it back!!! I lucked out with Contact Pets, who knows what could have happened if I'd stuck with Burley Dam.

You should never get any pet without the right knowlege and equipment, there's no excuse for not doing proper research and harming any pet out of your own negligence.
My weaners was £1.25 med mice are .90 but what really made me sick was a tiny pack of sphagnum moss about enough for just 1 hide £4.99. my local rep are rip off merchants and they make up loads of turd about the stuff you've got so you buy theirs. At least the had weaners this time but they're not that cheap

my personal fave this weekend was watermarque in yeovil, selling a bag of shredded newspapaer, i'd judge it to be about 1 newspaper per bag.... selling at £3.50.... even more annoying when i found out that they sell big bales (like, hay bale size) in mole valley farmers for only a couple of quid more. that and the thing, if you only need a small bags worth, why not just go and buy a paper and rip it up yourself?!?
i wont buy a rep. from a pet shop anymore, possibly a specialist rep shop if they were good.
and tbh, i cant take any credit for finally finding this site, if lee hadn't had the balls to email me.... well... i hate to think where ra would be now.

I know what you mean. I've been reading about/researching Boscs for the last few months. It still makes me sick to see all the ones up for rehoming because "they've got a bit big" or "too boisterous". Pi**es me off

Sorry Chris, I didn't see your post.

Like BE said they are a thumping great lizard when fully grown. Problem is that they look dead cute in the rep store and a lot of former owners (can't type what I'd like to but I think that's a more acceptable term) didn't think Bosc ownership through. Kinda like buying a Retic and then wondering where your cat has gone . I'm posting a monthly update on Godzilla under the 'Other Reptiles' section. Take a look from time to time
