have just come back off holiday and found my snake in his water bowl which is a little unusual 4 him. fed him and he aint no prob(only a couple of mouse pinkies but thats all he will eat), but then think i saw a little black mite on his head. aint seen any since, and his skin and eyes r all good, but i'm reluctant 2 get him out as i know ure not supposed 2 handle for 48hrs after a feed. and if he has got mites, what is best 4 treating them as ive read a few different things on here? |

have a good look in the water bowl if you are reluctant to handle him, chances are there will be some mites in the water bowl if he has them. as for treatment there are several routes you can take. none of them particularly enjoyable for the snake by all accounts LOL. Blackecho did a sticky on mite treatment with frontline i believe, you can also use ardap.

I personally have tried to shy away from using chemicals on everything but the viv (which is now in the shed airing out for 2 weeks, then i will re do the frontline and leave for another 2 weeks) My royal is in a rub with kitchen paper towel as substrate (which gets changed every day and i disinfect it with beaclean once a week) 2 cardboard hides and a water bowl (if you go down the chemical route, make sure you use a water bowl only big enough for the snake to drink from... my royal seems to like bathing, no matter the size of the bowl, another reason why i wanted to avoid chemicals on her. as for the snake herself, i did the oil bath... the method was originally found over on the dark side but was explained pretty well here:

I can second the "oil treatment". I did mine a couple of weeks ago and i dont think it bothered her one bit. I then put her in a rub (in a different room) while i went work with some mite spray on her viv. |

do u put your snake in a rub, then put the rub back in the viv or does the viv stink after being treated? just abit unsure how 2 heat the rub away from the viv. also, where do i buy frontline or ardap from? |

I put her into a rub in a different part of the house as apparently mites go walkabouts (i`ve heard 7-8 feet from the viv) I very liberally sprayed the viv with mite spray then left it for a few days with the glass doors closed to really fumigate it out. Then let it air out for another 3-4 days. |

PAM is well known, Frontline and Ardap are the most common I'd say. |

frontline spray is on GSL so you don't have to get it from your vet
that's what i would use personally (but i do get a good discount at work ) |

General Safety List I believe, basically meaning it doesn't have to be prescribed. |
