How old should a royal be before you use a heat lamp instead of a heat mat. Was thinking of getting a slightly older royal and dont want to buy a heat mat if i`m not going to need it.

if they're big enough to go in a viv you're better off ditching the heatmat.......... or just using it over night if you have a light/heat-bulb on during the day

Royal hatchlings are easily stressed with large spaces which can stop them feeding.

General rule of thumb is length of viv + width of viv = max length of snake, I would advise not moving a snake into a viv until it is as long as the viv.

a red bulb yes, prolly but not really anything else, it messes with their photoperiod (hours of natural daylight enabling them to determine the time of year and thus behave accordingly eg. mating in spring)

i'd got for a dimmer stat with a bulb otherwise it'll be like a disco, lol
as for the wattage i'd guess at 100w - should do the job without being on full power all the time

I use 75W in my 3' vivs, so you may get away with 60W.

both of my male royals are in vivs

Peanut my first royal was in a 2 foot viv when he was six months old.

i moved him into a 36x24x24 in Feb he was then 9 months old and weighed aroind 275g

I had him on a dimmer first off,but then switched tptb ceramics as i like them better than dimmers.

I'd agree with BE on 60W and definately put a dimmer stat on it. To give you an idea of the temps that it will reach unstatted my Bosc has one plugged straight into the wall (no stat) for his basking spot and that hits 115F to 120F quite easily throughout the day.
