Hi,
In the process of setting up for a royal. I've got a 36"x18.5"x21" (LxWxH) viv ordered, tomorrow I'll hopefully be receiving a dimmer stat, bulb guard and ceramic holder. I intend using a ceramic bulb but haven't a clue what wattage? I've got a 40watt and a 75watt, would either of those do, do you think?
I've got stacks of dried orchid bark for substrate. Decor wise what would be suitable? I've got quite a lot of slate doing nothing...
For lighting I'll probably use LED's on a timer.
My to get list currently stands at:
Digi thermometer Digi hygrometer Water bowl Hide - possible made from slate? More decor - branches Door wedge
Have I missed anything?
I do have some snake experience as I have a Ghost corn.
When it comes to choosing my snake does sex or age make any difference? |

What age/size Royal are you getting? - Just that a 3' viv isn't suitable for a hatchling. Royals are quite agoraphobic, especially when young.
Your list sounds pretty comprehensive, though when you say hide, do you mean hides as you'd want at least one at each end and maybe something in the middle too. |

age certainly can do, and sex if you're worried about missed feeds............ best advice is to buy one labelled up as 'Boa dumerili'............... |

I don't know what size royal it would be as I'm setting up first and then looking but I guess my viv size dictates I don't get a hatchling. What size/age should I be looking at for that size viv?
Hide wise what I did for my corn was make slate hides at each end along with hollow bark. Would something like that be suitable for a royal? I don't mind buying proper snake hides, it's just a thought. |

royals dont really need any form of lighting either..it is purely us that like the lighting...
BE is right you will need 3 hides for a viv that size..
As for ceramic bulbs, i was told that the smallest should be 100W apparently the bigger they are the longer they last, but i dont know if this is true...
what age royal are you getting? |

Peanut was just a tad bigger than that when he went into a 36 inch viv.. |

I don't know what age I would be getting. Like I say I'm setting up before buying a snake. I have no problem packing out a viv. Roughly what age does 250g equate to? I know it wouldn't need lighting but I like to see what it is I'm keeping :) |

if you like to see it then why dont you use an infrared with your dimmer, that way it does not disturb your snake and you can still see him.. |

I'll certainly consider that. I've not had any problems with the LED lighting (3x LED rocks) in my corn snake viv though, she quite happily slithers around it. |

thanks remmy
males in particular can go off feeding for ages, fasting during brumation AND the subsequent breeding season............. so, like i said, maybe not a good idea if you stress about missed feeds
i still think the OP should look for one labelled as B.dumerili though |

GP is right though, i mean about males going off food and brumation...
As for corns not being bothered about lighting, that may be so but....
Royals are totally different and all it takes is something very minor and you have a non feeder..they dont take much to stop them feeding...
yeah there are lots of good ones, but there are just as many bad feeders as good.. |

i use a infra red on a dimmer and provides plenty of light and at the same time not enough to stress him. |

I assume that provides heat as well as you have it on a dimmer? I can't really go for that as the viv will be in the bedroom and the light would make sleep difficult. |

ceramic bulbs on a pulse stat dont give out any light but they give out heat, so if it's in your bedroom that might be better...? sorry if it's been mentioned already- i am still half asleep ;p |

That was my intention :) Got a stat, ceramic holder and cage today. Just need to get an appropriate watt ceramic bulb and that's the heating sorted. |
