sorry to sound stupid but the light thats in the tank do i leave it on all the time or turn it off at certain times

Is the light for display or heat?

If it's for display, turn it off at night. My Royal goes off her food if she has too much light in her viv.

i have my lights which are for my viewing pleasure only on a timer.

come on at 4pm and goes off at 9pm.

Are there striplights that don't get hot and don't need a guard, to use just for lighting?

there are so many different types of lighting that you can use...

i use a normal BC light fitting with a small 14w red pigmy lamp with a mesh guard to protect it.
