Well, Sid and Slim got a joint xmas pressie a tad early in the post today...
A ExoTerra twin tube light unit, and a 2.0 UVB repti glow 18" tube. (It'll be a while til Slim is big enough to move into the new viv so I only got the one for now.)
This is what it's going into, been doing bits and bobs slowly for a while now.
and...
Voila!
Nice and bright, but purely for aesthetics. Highly recommended, like most exo stuff I've bought.
One question I did have though, is at the rep shop I use most, they have tubes in their vivs, with no guard on the tubes, so I assumed that the tubes didn't get hot enough to hurt the occupant.
I've had mine on for a while to test it, and it is hot, I can hold onto it but it is quite warm, do I need to sort a guard? I've never heard of anyone putting a guard on a florescent (sp?) tube, only normal light bulbs?

2 things I'd say are:
If your snake can get hold of it then it can probably crush it or pull it down, sounds dangerous.
I would never recommend a fluorescent tube with any snake, especially a Royal or anything with red eyes. |

Fluorescent tubes flicker as electricity is delivered at 50Hz, so studies have decided that whilst humans can't really see it, snakes can and it may affect them, the constant flickering. Just another thing for them to get stressed about and stop eating etc.
I say I would not recommend it for this reason and as they have no use for UV or any artificial light really.
You may have no problems at all, fingers crossed |

Oh ok. It does say on the packaging that they do not flicker, so they are better for reps, that's why I got the exo terra one. But if they stress him out I'll choose a diff method. |

Albino snakes are much more sensitive to UV and there are instances of some going blind due to it. |

My Royal isn't albino, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention though BE, definately something to bear in mind. |
